302 vs. 70 LT1
« on: November 13, 2007, 03:52:22 AM »

I recently purchased 69z28 (VIN N575600) and was told it had a replacement 302 (CE426166 3970010 '74 counter exchange)...I have reason to believe it is 350LT1..heads have camel hump markings and casting #3991492.  Query: Is it possible that these heads are interchangeable with either 302 and 350LT1?  Apparently LT1 engine is one of Chevy's finest.  Does it make Z28 a lot  less valuable given most of car is either original and/or orig. to the year?

All the parts are interchangeable except what makes it a 302.  the crankshaft and the pistons. most other parts are the same or similiar.  should be able to see the crankshaft where the flywheel bolts on.  302 crank has a different shape than the others. there are photo's of it online I am sure.

The 302 crank flywheel flange has a unique shape, with a pie slice-shaped cutout on the edge, shown below.

Don't need to.  Check like bilede said at the back of the engine where the flywheel bolts on.  If it looks like JohnZ's picture, it's a 302 crank.

I call the 302 flange the "Pac Man" to help remember it.
