1968 Z/28 block code "MI" COPO 9665 info.
« on: January 06, 2006, 11:51:30 PM »
I like to consider myself pretty knowledgable on 1st gen camaros, but I ran across something today that I was hoping someone may be able to help shed some light on for me. I've always been under the impression that the only 1968 Z/28 block code was "MO", but today I ran across a piece of information stating that a block code of "MI" was used when COPO 9665 was specified. Anyone out there got any information on this and if it is correct? I've never heard of the "MI" block code for a 68 Z/28 and was wondering if anyone could verify they exist. Also was wondering if chevrolet did indeed produce a COPO 9665 in 1968, what did the package consist of?  Another COPO for 1968 I would like some information on is 9737 anyone know what this option consisted of? Thanks in advance.

According to CRG-

COPO 9737 was the "sports car conversion" that added a 140 MPH speedometer, a 13/16-inch diameter stabilizer shaft (increased from the 11/16-inch diameter standard bar), and E70x15 Goodyear Wide Tread GT tires on 15-inch rally wheels. COPO 9737 cars built after May, 1969 also got a center gas gauge and a factory tachometer. The COPO was pioneered by Don Yenko for his use, but was also ordered by other dealers, though in fewer numbers. (It appears that COPO 9737 was used by Yenko in 1968. During this previous year COPO 9737 apparently included the cast-iron 427ci/425HP L72 engine. CRG is still researching this.)

I have never heard of 9665

What was the info source? I see a couple of websites that all say exactly the same thing (i.e. all from the same source) and also say there's a MF code 350 that was COPO 9665.
I recall seeing about a MI block years ago, never seen a MI block though, nor heard of COPO 9665. Did they say what it included?

Oops, need to correct that 9737 info. In 68, it basically was a L78 and a 140 speedo.

I ran across the information in the Camaro White Book by Mike Antonick. It was in the 1968 block suffix section. I to had never heard of A COPO 9665 until I saw this or have I seen an "MI" coded 302 block. Appreciate the input. Maybe someone here has some more information.

Kinda thought so, format looked familiar. At least 2 or 3 websites republished his info.

I'd say it's an urban legend until I see some docs....

Just a note, In the book by Alan L. Colvin  Chevrolet by Numbers 1965-69  on page 50 the MI suffix is for a 69 Corvette 427- 390 hp with turbohydromatic and rochester carb.
