Getting Desperate
« on: August 15, 2007, 06:20:46 AM »
I'm very close to getting my car running after over a year of watching it sit in the garage.  I got a repro Muncie linkage, stabilizer bar and bracket, and the reverse light switch that were supposed to be correct for my 68 Z28.  It has the original trans, but the stabilzer shaft, bracket and reverse light switch bracket do not fit.  I think this stuff may be for a Saginaw or L48.  Whichever, it doesn't fit mine.  Does anyone know where you can get the right stabilizer shaft, bracket for this and the correct reverse light switch bracket for my car?  PS, the ones Rick's has are not right as this is where I got these.  Thanks.

I thought about it, but I hate to bother him because he's a busy guy.  But it looks like I'll have to try him. Thanks.

I am doing a 67 Muncie/Muncie SB shifter right now and can get you pictures of the correct parts if that will help but don't know where you can get the right parts other then ebay.
With many of the ebay shifter parts, the applications are not listed correctly so you have to know what to look for.

Here's a photo of the stabilizer bar and bracket mounted on a Muncie transmission.  Hope it helps.

Measure the stabilizer rod from the hex nut that's part of the rod to the beginning of the mounting slot. If it's 6 7/8" it's for a Saginaw. If it's 6 1/16" it's for a Muncie SB.

I did my '68 SS 350 last summer.  I'll have to dig through my invoices, but I either got my stuff from Ricks or Classic industries.  Wasn't an easy project but everything fit and works well.  (except I haven't gotten to the reverse light switch yet.)

Wouldn't the Z28 and SS 350 be the same set up?  i.e. muncie trans and shifter

Thanks Martin!  Good to know.   :)

I haven't had time to get under it again, but I am sure it's the longer one as Martin's specs show that is about how much too long my stabilizer was.  Also the bracket on the tranny doesn't look like the one in Pauls pic.  That looks like a 69 Muncie?   Thanks again and I'll check as soon as I can.

The stabilizer mounting bracket in Paul's photo is correct for Muncie. The top curls toward the back of the trans when mounted. The Saginaw bracket curls toward the front of the trans when mounted. Hope this helps.

The bottom of the Muncie mounting bracket curls toward the rear of the transmission too.  See attached photo...

That's part of the problem then.  My bracket curves in at the top and out at the bottom (Sag).  I still haven't measured my bar, but I'm going to say it's the longer of the two sizes.  So, where to get the right bracket?  I would think if the other stuff is repro'd the right stuff would be too.  I really appreciate the help. I'm trying to get the final stuff on the engine to start it up Friday.  It's been out for 15 monthsa nd I really want to drive it before the monsoons come.
