Camshaft Number

A few people had asked me about the 030-030 camshaft that we are using in the 302s that I buiid here at the shop.  I'm putting an engine together today and have the cam card.  Part # is 12-107-3, CS replacement for 3849346.

Hope this helps.  We have had great luck with Comp Cams.  Years ago, we have a couple of issues with the Crane version of the same cam.  Two wiped on us and that is a nightmare that no one wants to go through.  Probably a batch of bad cores.

Jerry,back in 1980 a friend and I built a 350 engine with a crane cam W/ solid lifters and the same thing happend,the number 8 cylinder intake lobe and the number 5 cylinder intake lobe decided to check out and ruined the main bearings and some other things. We never bought crane camshafts since.We used isky cams and never had a problem.

I think the Comp kits are a little more $$, Crane sells theirs through the GM hobby shop pretty cheap.

Hi I am having a 302 assembled next week for my 8 Z and have been following all the camshaft talk. I have bought a Speed-Pro 30-30 cam part# CS-118R  that I was going to install in the engine. Any thoughts on this cam good or bad before I use it or not use it. Thanks Paul

I know several guys who have used the F-M/Speed-Pro CS-118R "30-30" cam in their '64 and '65 Corvette 327/365's, with stock GM #3911068 valve springs (as originally equipped), and none have had any problems at all.

Thanks John I also have the stock GM valve springs along with roller tip rockers to go with the cam

Jerry....how long ago are we talking on the cams that wiped out?  Was this many moons ago, or fairly recently?  I've got a crane in my DZ, done 2 years ago.

Probably about five years ago.  Some other customers had problems about the same time.  When we switched to Comp, have not had a problem so we're sticking with them.

Paul, I just want to say that I used the speed pro cs-118r in mine and wiped a lobe in about 500 miles. I still think I did everything right to break it in.I'm putting a new one in tomarrow and it isn't a speed pro.It could have been my fault but I'm not going to chance it  Bob

Now I am wondering about the Federal-Mogul CS118-R cam that is in my 68 Z. The cam was installed 4 years ago and has about 1500 miles on it with no troubles yet. How long do these things go before problems start if in fact they do break down and wipe a lobe?

Bob, what valve springs were you using with the CS-118R?
