Rally wheels 1968 z28
« on: May 27, 2007, 11:53:39 PM »
Ok, here is my delima.  I know 68 rally wheels should be DF stamped. I have been lucky that almost all of the original parts were still intact on my Z28 . My wheels have an FW stamp (chevelle or monte), but the date code is wrong! The stamps on my wheels are as follows   K18 4 28 FW. Which is correct for my 05c   Z28.  Any thoughts?

My guess is that someone changed the DF (15x6) wheels to FW (15x7) wheels so they could install wider tires.  I've never seen (or heard of) an original '68 Z/28 coming from the factory with anything besides DF rally wheels.  All five of rally wheels on my '68 Z/28 are stamped DF.   :)

There are five different versions of the DF wheels, and all 1968 Z28s got the DF rims.  I have a detailed break down about all of the different DF wheels in my new 4th edition Z28 Camaro fact book.  www.z28camaro.com.

Jerry -

Is the 4th edition out now?  Your website still has the 3rd edition listed.

Any thoughts on the FW stamped wheel? I spoke to a friend, who was a gm mech and parts manager. He claims these wheels were gm replacements for 68. I have no clue!

Yes, the 4th just came out last week.  The FWs were mostly used on Monte Carlos, same offset as the YH and a lot cheaper.  There are thousands of these for sale at swap meets.  Very common.  Most of the 69 Zs that I inspect today have these wheels.  They are incorrect for any Z28.

I doubt it was a replacement for the DF wheel.  Not only is the FW wheel 1" wider, but the wheel offset is different (+.30 for the FW wheel vs +.50 for the DF wheel).  This is something GM wouldn't have done.

The "8" in the FW is likely for 1978, not 1968.

the date had me baffled. I can only find rallys with that stamp from 71-75. that was it.

Check this post out, camaros.net

The "FW" is a 'JJ' rim profile 15X7" rim with a .30"* offset.
GM #3997899 (Group 5.803) with applications from 1969 ~ 1975.
Listed as a service replacement for part #3970531 wheel for 1969 Camaros w/Disc Brakes Front and Rear (RPO-JL8) and w/ 302 option (RPO-Z28).
Listed as a standard or replacement wheel for 1970~75 Monte Carlo and 1974~75 Chevelle (exc. wagon).
Welded construction, 4 cap projections and Tubeless rated.

Code you gave may be missing a number or two - but, looks like a Kelsey Hayes Rally from the Romulus, MI plant manufactured in ? (1975?) on ???

*Some conflict in GM documents about this - measure the 'backspace' and see if it isn't slightly more than 4 1/2".

Hope some of this helps;
John
