Decoding 1969 Camaro Z28
« on: March 28, 2025, 12:59:20 AM »
Trying to decode my '69 Z28 rear for a date.  It reads BU022G2   I know it is a 373 posi, but is the date February 2nd?  This is a Van Nuys car with production date 03-03-69

Also the car has a M22 trans. I see P9B18C. I believe it means Muncie 1969 February 18 and 'C' for M22. The date is correct for a March 3rd assembled car. My problem is I see no vin number stamped anywhere. I think Van Nuys stamped them on top of the case, however nothing there. Question...is it possible it could still be original to the car without a vin number?

The rear axle code is missing a character. Should be eight; ex: BU0220G2.

Reviewing data, that’s the only known axle date that fits. February 2nd was a Sunday; not likely and don’t have an example. The Detroit gear and axle plant was 2,300 miles from VN, 12 days seems possible.

Don’t have P9B18C in my data. Have P9B21C in a VN Z/28 built just after yours.

The missing VIN will be a concern as re-stampers have a process to eliminate them.

Here’s some restored Muncie main cases; three had the same VIN.
Learning more and more about less and less...

I don’t think any transmission would not have the VIN stamp on it due to warranty and QC tracking, same as the engine. I never say never, but …..

William and David thank you both for a reply. I need to dig deeper on the rear axle code. Car has evidence of being raced in the day. So trans was probably replaced with no vin on it.

Post a picture of the axle stamp. How about a picture of the casting date stamp.
