1969 Camaro rear wheel well undercoating
« on: September 21, 2024, 02:24:00 PM »
All the original cars I  have seen the rear exhaust hangers were installed before undercoat . Some of the hangers have alot of undercoating on them and some dont . Thoughts ?photos ? getting ready to do the undercoating on a 69 and not sure if i should spray part of the hangers?    Thanks

In production, only the rear wheel housings [Fisher Body] and rear portion of the front skirts [Chevy assembly] were coated with sound deadener. At Norwood, the inside of the rear quarter panels behind each wheel house was also coated. This was done prior to the installation of the exhaust system.

The undercoating you have seen was likely the dealer-applied stuff the original owner requested.

Here's your benchmark.

Nice, but not all of them were finished that way. In my experience, there was some black paint coverage along the frame rails. It's common to find body color paint under the rear axle bumper brackets.

Van Nuys had a 'blackout' paint process late in assembly. Among other areas, they coated the tailpipes.

I worked at a Pontiac dealership '76-'77 when I was a teen, having the dealer do undercoating was a pretty common thing back then. There was very little to no prep so overspray was common on components other than the floorboards.
