69 AC Remanufacrured compressor
« on: August 15, 2024, 03:13:43 PM »
Bought a new? Remanufactured? Compressor back around 2007ish.
Would the oil be for 134 or R12?

Thx
Dean

Totally depends on how you’re going to configure the system - the compressor will run with either depending on which you are setting up for, just make sure the compressor is internally clean(with no residual oils from the opposite Freon from you are converting). Same goes for the rest of the components. A good friend of mine converted his A6 compressor on his ‘69 Firechicken 6-7 years ago to 134, has maybe 20K miles on it and works great.

How the system is going to do when 134 goes away is another good question -

Steve

Was in a hurry when I wrote my question. Here is some clarification.
All components are new with no old refrigerant or oil….Except the compressor came with oil in it.
I bought it back in probably 2007 or so. I would assume that the oil in the compressor is for 134, but was asking if that is correct. Surely, even though factory replacement compressor, it would not have R12 oil in it?…
Thx

R12 has been on the endangered species list with the EPA for well over 20 years. I think you would be safe to assume it has 134 oil in it.

Some places do still rebuild for R12, and (as of a few years ago) will ask how you want it rebuilt - R12 or R134. R12 is still out there, although very expensive.  I'd be careful about assuming what you have, unless you still have the paperwork.

Might be worth it to get the compressor and entire system flushed out before you install it.  Start fresh.

Thx guys. Appreciate the thoughts.. since compressor is the only thing with oil in it, should be easy to flush just to be sure, However FYI. Had a Z11 from 1999 to 2005. Refreshed engine trans rear etc and AC. It had R12 in system when I disassembled it. In spring of 2001 when finished took it to a local shop. Guy says nope no need to flush it if it’s been down for a year. He charged with 134. Sold the car in 2005 and would still freeze you out. Pretty sure didn’t even change O rings. I know…..

It’s not just the O rings you have to worry about - the spag oil used with R134 will eventually erode the R12 hoses as well as the O rings (new compatible rings are Viton if I remember correctly). Also, R133 systems do not use the POA valve (at least in R12 form), most air conversions recommend gutting the old valve and keeping the shell for original cosmetics.

I guess at some point (when I run out of R12 access), I’ll have to convert my Z11 to R134. Last pricing I saw for a 30lb can was more than I paid for my X77 in ‘73 - no exaggeration.
