YH wheel dates correct for my Z?
« on: May 11, 2007, 11:27:46 AM »
My Z was built April, 3rd week.

I found a set of YH wheels that are dated 04/21/69.  The 21st is the last day of the 3rd week, correct?

Are these wheels correctly dated for my Z?

What dates should I be looking for?

Thank you Camaros.org,

TF, look back and see what day of the week April started on in 69.  Might have been the 1st or 2nd.  The next week would get you to the 9th, the third week the 16th etc.  The 21st could have been the 4th week, see? I'd think too late either way.  Sorry.

The last day of the 3rd week of April, 1969 was Friday the 18th. It would have taken a day or two for the body to get from the Fisher plant to the Chevrolet line, so depending on what day your car was started (and what time), the 21st would not be out of line for these wheels. As a matter of fact, it would line up nicely if your car is a Norwood car and it was started by Fisher on the 18th n the afternoon. It wouldn't line up if your car was started on Monday the 14th.

Is your car a Norwood or LA car?

Ed -

Your car was built about 4/22-23.
That's a too close, IMO.

You're probably right Kurt, but it does raise a few questions:

1. How long would it take Kelsey Hayes to finish the wheels after the date stamping, and load them onto the delivery truck? (I'm assuming truck, but maybe rail?)

2. How long would it take the Kelsey Hayes (Romullus, Michigan) plant to get these new wheels to the Norwood plant? (We're looking at approximately 250 miles.)

3. How long would it take the Wheel and Tires Assembly area to get them ready and deliver them to the Final Line?

If we're talking several days, then yes, it doesn't look good. If we're talking one or two, then it's very possible.

Also might want to check the survivor Z28 on the home page of my web site.  I have one of the original wheels posted there and the vin and BD for reference.  www.z28camaro.com,

The car is sold so I will be pulling the photos soon.

April started on Tuesday in 69, that week would have been part of 03E. The 04C is the week of April 21 to April 25.  I guess it would depend on when your car was built in 04C, but like Kurt says4-21 wheels are probably to late.

My 04L car has 4 wheels dated 3/2/69 (might be 3/12 or 3/22 as there is only a single 2 right at the edge of the valve stem, and I can't see another digit) on it.

The wheels were shipped by rail, so it took a day or two to get the rail car loaded, marshalled and tied into a train at Romulus, another day to get to Norwood, and another day or two to get it re-routed and marshalled into the Norwood yard and spotted inside the plant to be unloaded. Then they had to be sent through the clean, phosphate, dip-prime and bake system, transferred from that conveyor to the wheel paint line conveyor, painted, baked, then transferred to the wheel room for mounting and balancing and installation on the car. Would have taken 5-7 days from the wheel date before it went on a car.

WOW.  Thanks for the info.  I will keep looking for YH wheels with an earlier date.

Mark, did you mean to say your car was built 04C (instead of 04L)?

Kurt, please clarify, my Z was completed on 04/22 - 04/23 (04/21 is the first day of the 3rd week)?

So the assemble process is like this? From a CRG article, it took two days to get through the Fisher Plant and 1.5 days to get through the GM Plant.  If the cowl tag was attached on day two (04/22) at the Fisher plant, that would mean that my car was started on 04/21 (04/21 is the first day of the 3rd week), cowl tag installed on 04/22, wheels installed on 04/23, and car completed on 4/23 or 04/24.

It took 7 days from the wheel stamp date, it sounds like the latest wheel date would be 4/15 (4/22 - 7 days), correct?

Nope, 04L.  Nearest I can figure it rolled off the assembly line around 10:30 pm on April 30th 1969 as its about 70 VIN numbers prior to the last reported April built car from Norwood.  Was probably started very early in the day on Monday 4/28.

Cowl tag was attached first day of assembly, when the body wasn't much more than a firewall, so the earliest the car could have been started is 4/21.  It took about 3 days to finish the car, so the earliest it would have rolled out of the GM side of the plant is probably late in the day on 4/24.
