Spare tire
« on: May 04, 2024, 05:14:59 AM »
I was able to find this information on an earlier thread, but I have no clue where to find the manual much less the part
Retainer, Jack Base (P/N 3929976, Group 8.820).
Thanks for the help

I'm not totally understanding your post. What year are you working with & is it LA or Norwood built? What pieces do you need to find?....Joe

I remember that 3929976 retainer being called out for convertibles only? The jack stores differently on a coupe, (left to right vs front to rear) and they use the base of the jack upside down to retain the spare.

If you look at the standard (blackwall) tire & jack sheet (UPC 10, sheet A2), the coupe used #3949506 sticker, and the convertible used #3949513, and the spare wheel was installed with the outer face DOWN, and the jack base was installed with the top side DOWN. This sheet is for the standard equipment condition, which was blackwall tires.

If you look at the PW7/PW8 whitewall/redline/RWL tire & jack sheet (RPO PW7/PW8, sheet A1), the "model" block states "12300-467", which specifies the convertible body style, and that's what's shown in the illustration, using sticker #3949515. The illustration shows the spare wheel installed with the outer face (and the whitewall or redline or raised white letters) UP, using the added retainer #3929976, and the jack base was installed with the top side UP.

For the "SS", look at RPO L-48, non-illustrated parts list (sheet A2); under UPC 10, it says the spare wheel assembles the same as RPO L-35. If you go to RPO L-35, non-illustrated parts list (sheet A3), under UPC 10, it says the spare wheel assembles the same as RPO PW7, which specifies sticker #3949515.

Looks like that 3929976 retainer was only used if the car was delivered with red or whitewalls, or raised white letters (and possibly a convertible?).
Guessing that’s a tough find.

According to GM, the 3929976 retainer was for the 1968 & 1969 Camaro convertible:

Please forgive me for my ignorance. I have absolutely no idea where you guys find this information.
I have the hook, and wingnut, I just need a solid source for the retainer. Any help or explanation would be great!!!

I have the STL file and can get one 3d printed if you need. Plastic is cheap, but I’m trying to source a metal printer. PM me if you want  to discuss further.

Here’s a 3d plastic printed version. I’m trying to find a local printer for a metal part for authenticity visuals, and no work required to sand out the 3d lines.

FYI acetone can be used to smooth out 3D prints to get rid of the ribs/ridges.

David K that is a nice print. Did you scan an original? Or how did you arrive at that shape? Looks like a fairly simply stamping originally.

Rustynut is your car a convertible? Your profile says an SS 350 but makes no mention of a convertible. Unless the retainer you seek is not for your car? Just curious. Anyhow the “manual” is the AIM ( Assembly Instruction Manual) that Kurt S has made available to all.

My car is not a convertible, however however I've read this is the correct retainer. If this isn't correct, what is?
Any help with this is greatly appreciated

Only used on 68-69 convertible not coupe! Coupe only uses nut and jack base like Badshifter picture 2nd one down on left side. Hope this helps.
