Inner fender cup washers and bolt colors
« on: February 27, 2024, 10:47:23 PM »
Do we know for a fact what color the fender cup washers were for a 69 Camaro, and how the color was made. Painted, Zinc, Phosphate???? Also for the bolts that hold them in place? Legend judges are saying the fender cup washers should be painted black with a Grey phophate bolt holding them in place. Is this correct?---Ughhh

I believe that is correct.  When I stripped my low mile fender washers, you could see the pattern of black dip-painting....one spot had thick paint that virtually filled the edge of the recess on each one

Get a Can of Semi gloss Rustoleum
RUST-OLEUMŽ
1-Quart Semi-Gloss Black Brush-On Protective Enamel
Mfg.# 7798502 Sku# 4523528

on a warm day, dip paint the washers and Hang to dry, they will come out smooth and with factory like coverage

That's OK Jim if that paint matches but if sheen is off from his inner fenders it's going to stand out. Might want to find something that matches what you have.

Talked to Brad from Legends. Very adiment that the washers are semi gloss black, and the bolts that hold them are Black zinc phosphate. As well as all the other bolts in the wheel well area, are the sam Black zinc phosphate. Basically he quoted word for word out of the Legends book, which I think is on page 53.

If your car doesn't have style trim, the bolts that hold the fenders to the wheel wells will be phosphate. If you car has style trim, those fender/wheel well/lip molding bolts will be zinc. Don't forget to under coat the front wheel well, but only 1/2 way. (I lost points for over doing it) :) .....Joe

Good pic and since many other parts used the same paint one might want to have similar sheen or it will look out of place. I remember JohnZ stating they were dipped in semi-gloss lacquer primer.

GM Reconditioning Black is what I used to get an OEM look.
I found that a first quick dip went on thin followed by a second longer emersion dip (after the first dried) gave it the factory look and better promoted the classic runs.

The new stuff is sold on Amazon under the name of GM Chassis Black Reconditioning Paint.
The GM can I bought from a Chevy dealer is about 20 years old but still sprays on nice and dries fast too.
It is not strong as todays 2K paint, but it looks more factory. I have seen different chassis black paints by other vendors but nothing as close to the GM paint results. I lost count of how many people asked me how I duplicated the factory sheen using the GM paint.
