Man that sucks! Lesson; make sure the shop that has your car has controls so that can't happen and at least has insurance to cover all losses.

I read an article about a guy that had his motorcycle stolen. He used his air tag and found it in a garage. The popo wouldn't do anything because he could not prove who took it. I think was in corrupt Chicago.

You’ll need to remove the speaker from the air tag to make it more effective as a tracking device.

Funny thing about air tags is that if you have an Apple phone, it will tell you that you are being tracked.  Not sure if there is a way to disable the feature, but my friend had one in his wallet, and my phone alerted me about it.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons for removing the speaker. While the app tells you that there is an airtag near you it wont be emitting any noise so it's harder to locate.
