1969 Camaro Z28 X77 spoilers but no stripes?
« on: June 25, 2023, 05:34:04 PM »
Hello, this is my first time on a message forum.  I tried to search for my topic but i did not see anything, so I thought you all might be able to help me.  I have a 1969 Camaro Z-28 X77 built 05A , 71 71 pnt.  The car was painted a dark blue but I found the original 71 paint underneath.  My deck lid and spoiler has the original paint color underneath the current paint.  However i can not find any white stripping underneath the decklid paint, spoiler paint or the vent cowl. Is it possible that a May built 1969 Z 28 could have been ordered without stripes? From what I have read the spoiler and stripes was required on all Z-28 cars built after April of 1969?  Thank You

Information on deleting stripes can be found under special paint designation:

Since your car is 71-71, it came with standard white stripes.

Only way to 100% confirm is either with paperwork, day 1 photos or original owner statement.  But to Kurt's point it was coded to have stripes.  I added the first part just to cover any possible human error within the factory which should have been caught but...

Factory installed spoilers were painted on the car, that is why there would not be stripes under the spoiler. Cars with a delete stripe option would have special paint. Special paint would noted as a - - on the firewall trim tag.

I have an original paint stripe delete Z28.

Just to make a small point about stripes.  In this case with this car the stripe would have been applied to the lid and spoiler together but not the case for LA cars (at least in 68, which I am still researching 69).  Here is a previous discussion on the matter.

I have an original paint stripe delete Z28.

In 1970, I lived just East of Toronto, Canada, in my area, there was a '69 Z came out of the States, no spoilers, no stripes, Frost Green code

 59. You say cars with delete stripe option would have special paint, does that mean just the fact there were no stripes ? Frost Green

wouldn't be special order paint would it ? I have vivid memories of that car having driven it a number of times, the owner also bought a '70

LT-1 Corvette from a local dealer when he arrived here avoiding the draft. I had photos but they are lost, just great memories  !

Since the car has 59-59 paint code, it had stripes.
If the car was stripe delete (or other special paint), then it would be ---.

Kurt, thanks for your reply, when I referred to frost green 59 code, medium green 721 code interior, that was how I remember the

car, no spoilers, no stripes,  that info was not off the plate with codes, the car was originally out of Illinois, most likely long gone

 now.

your quote  " If the car was stripe delete (or other special paint), then it would  be ---."

Am I missing something here ? I don't have any where near the knowledge of the members here, I am always learning.

Just for reference this non Z car is the correct exterior colour , not correct interior colour, I think the image was off this forum ?

Thanks GMAD_Van Nuys, followed your link and the one to the discussion from this forum on special paint, quote from there " In

1968-69, either deletion of a stripe or use of a non-standard stripe color was also considered to be special paint"

understanding more now.

Mike - My friend's 1968 Z28 was a British Green code Z that the previous owner had the white stripes painted over.  Although I believe this Camaro was built at Van Nuys as it was delivered to Harry Mann Chevrolet in Los Angeles, CA, we never looked at the trim plate. - Mark
