110 octane fuel
« on: May 04, 2023, 04:01:32 PM »
Recently acquired a '69 Z28 with the original engine. Considering running VP 110 octane or also have access to 100 octane aviation at my local airport. Any thoughts on this appreciated as well as changes I need to make to timing? I believe the car has been running on 93 pump Sunoco.

You'll read on here that many folks use good ol 93 octane.  I prefer Shell ...Sunoco.  You'll get many opinions on this question I'm sure.  I'm just a schmuck with an L48.

No reason to run 110 unless you are having problems and even then you could just blend in a little.

Can run 100 aviation fuel or blend some of that with the 93 as well.  When dad used to race a little 302 with 13.5 to 1 compression we ran AvGas and would always add some MMO.

Don't waste your money if you don't have to because the car won't care.

Im assuming ya'll are talking about mixing the 110 with non ethanol 93/91 right? I just got 12 gallons of Sunoco 110 and it cost $174.00. I was going to cut it 50/50 with a 93 or 91 but wondered about the ethanol..

Let me see. Decades of running high performance cars and never had a problem with pump gas. Must be a virgin to the car world for this question. I can cross the state line and buy real fuel if I wanted. I drive my cars like I hate them and never blew one up.

I don’t think it will matter a lot if you use ethanol or not. But use non-ethanol if you can get it.

I would not go 50/50 mix. 2-3 gallons of 110 per tank should be plenty.

Yes it can be done if you stay conservative on the timing. My 11:1 compression 468 runs on pump gas.

North of 93 a little should be fine. 110 isn't necessary.

My holley carb needs rebuilt. I suspect it is the ethanol that took it's toll on the gaskets. Part of the reason I want to eliminate it.

Been there - done that.  My power valve cup on my Q-Jet failed because of that crap.

Unless your compression is very high, aka 12 to 1, pump gas is fine for your car. 'Most' gas stations (within reason) sell 100 octane right next to the 93 (or 91) here in the West. IF you need to adjust your timing, just drop it a couple of degrees and your off and running. Happy motoring as they say!

I used to be able to get 93 here in central OK.  No more.  Best I can do is non ethanol 91.  The engine currently in my 69 Z is built to 70 LT-1 specs with a thin head gasket and true compression is around 11.5:1.  No telling what it is on your car.  Most likely north of 11:1.

Set your timing at 36 total, and try a tank of 93 if you can get it.  If not, try the highest octane pump gas available.  If it doesn't ping, you're good.
If it does, then run some of that 100LL you have access to.  I am lucky to have access to the local airport, so it is easy for me to get.  That is what I run in my Z currently.  It pings like crazy on 91.  Yes, I COULD back the timing off enough to stop it from pinging, but I prefer to used good gas and enjoy the full benefit of the higher compression engine.  I also use it in my lawn and garden stuff.   It has a much longer shelf life than the stuff at the pump.

Gas is different in different parts of the country.  I notice every time I venture down to Texas, once I get far enough south, there is 92 and sometimes 93 at the pump. So, when some one tells you they can run pump gas in their performance car, they MAY just be using better gas.  New cars with computer controls are a whole different discussion.

Thanks for all the replies. 93 octane readily available here in Western PA. I'm just trying to eliminate the ethanol which is hard on carb gaskets. For as little as we usually run these toys, I'm OK with the $7.00 per gallon charge for aviation fuel which is rated at 100 octane and skip the ethanol.
