69Z Starter not cranking
« on: November 26, 2022, 11:38:13 PM »
12.5 volts on the battery
I pushed the car back and forth in gear
Lights work, etc.

Any suggestions on trouble shooting steps?  I suspect I'll have to check voltages tomorrow.

Clutch pedal pushed in? For '69 that's where the neutral safety switch was.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Starting System (Vehicle in a safe condition)

A) Test the starter motor and solenoid: Connect a jumper from the Hot battery post of the solenoid to the "S" post of the solenoid.

B) ^^ as above Determine whether the ignition override switch (i.e. Starting safety switch)  are functioning correctly, Disconnect and jumper the connector if needed.

C) Check the ignition switch "START" position: Connect a 12 volt test lamp or voltmeter between the starter (S) post on the solenoid and ground, turn key (Switch) to start and verify voltage presence at the solenoid post.

These should be a few good diagnosis step to start (no pun intended) with.

Make 100% sure the car is not in gear when you try to jump the starter.

I was checking compression in my 69Z and was jumping the starter with an external switch. The service manual states in bold text to disconnect the distributer negative terminal and turn the ignition switch on to avoid damage to the ignition switch grounding circuit. Never had heard of this but did it to be safe.
