67 Z28

I have a friend looking at a 67 Camaro. The seller claims it is a real Z28, I'm attaching a picture of the trim tag and one of the car. I did do some decoding of the tag and it looks like it came with a 3-speed floor shifter for M15 or M13 ( 2B ). I not familiar with the 67 trim tag and  I was wondering what you guys think of this tag.

Nope. Ain't a Z28. The picture is too blurry to make out the options, but it doesn't have 4L so not a Z. If it is 2B, then yes, it came with the 3 speed floor shifter. And what looks like 3D would be under dash courtesy lights.

If the VIN begins with 12337 it started life as a 6 banger. If 12437, then it started life as a base LF7 (327/210) V8.

At least they did a decent stripe, which a lot of fakes don't. Might as well tell your friend the interior and exterior colors are wrong per the trim tag as well.

Seller probably thinks "But it's coded Z 28 right on the trim tag, see the 717 Z 28?" However the Z is part of the interior code and the 28 is actually option code 2B for the 3 speed.

I'm always curious to learn the backstory of how these cars get mis-identified.  While I understand that there is some outright fraud that can happen, there are often cases of simple mistakes that were made ... oral history can become its own living entity that may not align with the facts and so on.  I'd be interested to learn how long the current owner/seller has had the car and why, exactly, he believes it to be an original Z28.  Perhaps someone dropped a 302 into it at some point?  It doesn't, of course, change any of the facts.

It turns out the owner passed away and the family is selling his cars , 2 El Caminos and 1 Camaro. I  don't think the family knew much about the cars. I  passed on the info from the members to him, thanks guys.

Somebody is looking at the Trim location and thinks that the Z after the 717 means it's a Z/28, I would imagine. That is the only Z (anything) this car ever had, providing it is the matching cowl tag.

I showed my 69 to a supposed Camaro expert when I first got it and because my trim tag had NOR288257 he told me it was a Z28. According to him the NOR28 made it a Z. He owned 8 Camaros at the time and was misinformed. I owned 3 and didn't know what all the stampings meant. I was curious and wanted to learn about those stampings so I am glad I found this website. Many so called experts out there. Definitely buyer beware.
