Special spare tire hold down bracket
« on: August 10, 2022, 11:34:47 PM »
There was a special spare tire hold down bracket used when the tire was mounted face up I believe.  The jack base was mounted right side up also. This was used just below the wing nut. Have  not seen this in the assembly manual.  But in some jacking instructions. Any info about this would be appreciated.

What bracket are you referring to? The 3929976 is a "retainer" and was only used on 68 and 69 big block convertibles.

What would make 68/9 big blocks special on a spare tire component?  I get the convertible being different but not big block.?

Interesting. I wonder if it’s just another AIM error.  Meaning placed in the wrong section.?.

That's what I believe for the 68. Just stuck in the wrong section.

The reason I believe that is because in all the P&A's I've seen, it only states "68 Camaro Convertible". It says NOTHING about "w/396". In addition, the 69 AIM shows it under UPC PW7/PW8 (sheet A1), so I really don't think the 396 had anything to do with it. As a matter of fact, PW7/PW8 was used on "12300-467" meaning 6 cylinder Coupe or Convertible (12300) and V8 Convertible (467).

As an aside, "12300" was Chevrolet's nomenclature for 6 cylinder Coupe or 6 cylinder Convertible because they were too lazy to state 12337 and 12367.

3929976 in 69 parts book list for 1968-1969 convertible only. No mention of engine size!

Retainer, Jack Base (P/N 3929976, Group 8.820).

In 1968, the retainer was for all SS Camaro convertibles (including SS 350 engines), excluding those with space saver wheel spare tires.  Here are the relevant 68 AIM pages: L34/A2.5-10E; L35/A15; L48/A2-10E; and L78/A3-10E.

In 1969, the retainer was for any Camaro with either the RPO PW7 (i.e., Tires; F70x14, 2-ply white stripe, original equipment) or the RPO PW8 (i.e., Tires; F70x 14, 2-ply red stripe, original equipment) tire option, excluding those with space saver wheel spare tires.  Here are the relevant 69 AIM pages: L35-L34/A3-10E; L48/A2-10E; L78/A3-10E; and PW7-PW8/A1.

The new 67-68 Camaro Legends Judging manual includes a photo of the retainer on page 131.
