Tonawanda sticker on 68 big block valve cover
« on: July 25, 2022, 03:24:11 PM »
I know that the usual place for the Bow tie Tonawanda valve cover sticker is on the passenger side valve cover near the front. But I was wondering if that is true for L34 and L35 cars with factory A/C? There are a lot of brackets for the A/C compressor that cover up areas of the passenger side valve cover. So I was wondering if the sticker was placed on the driver's side valve cover for these A/C equipped cars. If the sticker was placed by the Tonawanda plant before the engine was installed, then I guess it was always on the same side regardless if it was intended for an A/C car or not. I looked through the threads and posts on this subject in the originality section but I did not find my answer. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

I would agree with you ^^ Yup,  yet I still believe the "Engine plant" could get sloppy with the prescribed placement  with regards to alignment - placement variations a bit, or even missing.  This item has been reproduced for decades so Even Owner servicing can appear vintage and not represent a factory engine plant install variation.

My 2 cents is the sticker goes where it goes every time. The ac compressor switched sides in 1969, so did they move the sticker to accommodate?

The sticker will be in the same place as non-C60 cars. The engine was assembled at Tonawanda and the sticker applied there. The A/C compressor was installed on the Norwood (or LA) engine dress line so there was no reason to move it to a different location. As for the "exact same place" each time? Probably not. A quarter inch here, a quarter inch there... If I remember correctly, John said the sticker was applied to the valve cover before the valve covers were installed on the engine, and even though they had a template to place the sticker on the valve cover in the same place, they probably just eyeballed it most of the time.

Thanks for the great replies. I appreciate it, and I will put the bow tie sticker on the PS valve cover.

My '68 has AC and the original sticker was on the passenger side as well.

Just as an aside.

I was in the garage area at the Can Am race at Texas International Speedway in College Station, Texas in November 1969.

The two factory McLaren racers of Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme had Tonawanda stickers on their valve covers.
