1966 Advertising mock up - photos added
« on: April 20, 2007, 01:34:58 AM »
I have a large mock up made by the advertizing firm that handled the Camaro introduction. Interestingly there are differances between what was rendered in this and what came out in the production cars. Most notably the mock up nose apears about 3 inches longer (more like a Jag), and the turn signals on the standard grill which are in the valance the same as an RS. The round grill lights are rendered as driving lights like a Mustang GT.  I wondered if anyone else has come across this preproduction light idea?

There are other changes (fender eyebrows, mirrors, striping, vett spinner hubcaps, etc.) made to the ad before it apeared in Life magazine. Also copy was added that in the mock up show as squiggly lines.

Your thoughts?

Maybe it was based on a concept car. Any chance to post a picture?

Bought it off Ebay maybe 8 years ago from the son of the man that made the presentation. He included a letter stating the name of the firm his dad worked for and that it had been in his family since '66.

Now that's an interesting piece of memorabilia !  I wonder how many more like this are out there just rotting away in some attic. :'(

Those are Campbell-Ewald "story boards" - one of the first steps in developing a print ad. The car illustrations were always exaggerated in those days to make them look longer and lower. At the formal car shows, the Chevy Show & Display guys chained the cars down to the display platform and cinched them down about 2"-3" below normal design ride height to make them look "lower and sleeker". :)

Yes that was the name of the firm! The previous owner called this an early photostat made up by his Dad & staff that was actually presented to Chevrolet.

Notice the changes in the finished 2 page Life ad -

I'm still not sure of the date but the back side has an article on the movie Doctor Dolittle.

Just checked Ebay and found that the 9/30/66 cover was of Rex Harrison as DD.

I notice the spinners on the wheels in the first "story board".  But spinners did not make it to the actual car.  Spinners were very popular in the 60s.  There were lots of after maket versions avaiable.  It's interesting to see what early designs looked like; and then, what actually came to the showroom floor.

Since I sold my '67 SS Convertable this week I guess I'll part with this as well. If anyone here is interested Email me (rod67ss@earthlink.net) otherwise It'll be on Ebay in a week or so.
