chevrolet dealerships
« on: September 12, 2021, 10:24:20 PM »
A while back (2 years max) I thought I saw a post or a response in a thread where a guy posted a ton of black and white pics of 1st gen Camaros at dealerships, and you could see the different ways they were optioned. I am specifically looking for 69 Z/28 with the side pin stripes. I thought I saw a couple from early production cars. thanks for the help

There was a small window of availability for D96 Fender Striping on a Z/28. An update to the Showroom Album dated September 12, 1968 states:

"FENDER STRIPING (RPO D96, Body-side accent stripe) included with Rally-Sport and Style Trim Group. Not available with Sport Striping (SS or RPO D90). Available in combination with Front Accent Striping (RPO DX1) or with RPO Z28."

I interpret this to indicate is D96 was now optional with Z/28 or DX1 and Z21/Z22, no longer included.

This insinuates some very early production Z21 and Z22 Z/28s were built with D96. June 2014 there was an early production [mid-September '68] Z/28-RS on ebay. The car was rough and had a poor repaint early in its life. The repaint had mostly flaked off and D96 striping was visible.

Guessing here, I'd say Z21 & Z22 Z/28s included D96 striping for a short period of time. Per the Showroom Album Revision, D96 was no longer included but became optional as of late September '68. As a discrete option, D96 is rare, 5,176 cars. At some point, possibly the January '69 revision, the one stripe per car restriction was put in place.

Based on my db by the end of September '68 only 600-700 Z/28s had been produced. Of those about 58% had Z21 or Z22. That's about 400 cars; maybe a few more were also ordered with D96. Small wonder I have never seen an OE paint Z/28 with D96.

In conclusion, best guess D96 on a Z/28 with Z21/Z22:

August-September '68 probably included
October '68-December '68 optional but very rare
January '69 to the end of production-no longer available.

thank you, I saw you post this info previously. I remember someone not specifically related to the side pin stripes post a bunch of black and white vintage pics from 67-69, and you could see some in very different configurations, at least one of which was side striped 69 Z/28

If I'm not mistaken, the large 2-page ads for the '69 Z28 taken out by Chevrolet showed an orange car, black stripes, black vinyl top AND the pin stripes on front/rear fenders... This ad showed up in many magazines at the time, but I'm not sure I've ever seen them on a Z28 other than that ad...

Cars used for print ads are often pre-production 'styling' cars. The pics were commonly air-brushed to add or conceal features.

The Z/28 given to Jean-Claude Killy was modified by Chevrolet Styling. It had a molded-in rear spoiler, quad exhaust trumpets, chromed rally wheels with white stripe tires. The rocker trim, quarter louver trim and rear bumper guards were removed. The fender striping was much broader than production D96 striping.

Anyone buy or own a Camaro that was originally sold from (now gone) Rancho Chevrolet, Reseda, California?

Here's a ad from Rancho Chevrolet, don't know what year ? you can probably tell from the model number shown for the Camaro ?

Thanks! If I had to guess, that ad would be around 1967-ish.

Group/7:  Thanks for the information.  Possible the car may still exist, although in a form modified from its show car version thus masking the identity.  Intriguing.

Yes, thanks for post it! Just my observation on the rear duck tail spoiler, it kinda reminds of a Shelby-Mustang-ish look. Wondering IF that was what Chevy/GM was trying to achieve?

Sorry for the parallel discussion.  Also note the lower rear fender flares mimicking the 1970 Vette.  Never seen that on any other styling Camaro.
