4053 Carb Ink Stamp Font?
« on: April 09, 2021, 08:28:11 PM »
I'm trying to identify the font used for the carburetor ink stamps below. The photos are of an NOS 4053 carb I own dated 924 (4th week of Feb 1969) and I'd like to get ink stamps made so I can duplicate them for my project Z. For reference, the letters are 8mm or 5/16" high. Anyone recognize the font?

I don't recall - do the stamps show up on original carbs? I've definitely seen them on service carbs.

I emailed Jerry but he hasn't replied yet. I don't believe the ink stamp was used in production. Only in service. However, I'll let Jerry comment since he's seen a LOT more original carbs than I have!

I'll have to dig through my photo library to see what I can find however in the meantime here is a photo of Charley L's (former) 1,100 mile Norwood built 70 Z (March 70) showing the original Holley carb with the same type of ink stamps with the same letter font. Although not proof this was also done for the 1969 MY it does indicate it was a practice for Norwood production line installed carbs.

Photos I took at MCACN 2016 Vintage Certification of Jim B's 20K mile 1969 2A built Norwood Z showing the same stamp and font on the airhorn:

All of the original Holley's made for Chevrolet do have the ink stamping.  Here's another virgin from my secret stash of parts, dated 854.  I can also barely see part of the 4053 ink stamp on my 25,000 mile survivor Z28.  Some carb restorers are ink stamping carbs but the fonts are not even close to correct.

Just wondering here, not to question the Vintage judging or Jim’s car, but why would a 02A car have the fuel line support bracket? Also I thought 4053 carbs used the accelerator pump housing with clutch type countersunk retaining screws? Lloyd could this picture be another carb on another car?

I'll post a photo tomorrow but yes all of the original carbs have the countersunk holes with clutch headed screws.  Here's a bowl photo from the survivor '69 Z28 I owned about 12 years ago, 27,000 mile car.

Found a photo.  This is the correct 30cc accelerator pump for the GM Holley production carbs.  Even in NHRA's Stock Eliminator class where I compete we are not allowed to install the larger 50cc pump.

Thanks, that’s what I remember and what my own 06A RSZ has, I’ve owned it since 74, it has the same ink stamp bowl BTW., and it has a rear line support.

Good catches Mike, the carb was serviced at some point since new and the clutch screws were discarded when the accelerator pump was replaced as is unfortunately sometimes the case. The later fuel line support bracket was added as February builds didn't have them. There are other service items in the engine compartment including the distributor vac diaphragm and plug wires. The photo was posted to highlight the carb ink stamp however as is typical in Vintage Certification, there are deductions for these service items, the carb in the main wasn't one of them. I'm really interested in identifying the font for the ink stamp?

Thanks Lloyd, I will try to get a picture of my carb bowl ink stamp, If I can get the air cleaner off where my car is stored under my hoist . I think my carb body ink stamp is almost invisible now.
Just a thought - Can you take the pictures to a stamp & stencil company to have them reproduce it?

Mike, there's a local stamp company who I've had make up a few stamps for me. They may know the font and I will ask however I've generally found it easier when I tell them the name as some of the early fonts aren't easy to identify since they aren't in use any more. I've also tried an on-line font identifier service however that came up empty because the stamping on my carb isn't legible enough to ID.
