Help to ID this bolt
« on: March 23, 2021, 01:01:52 AM »
Greetings and thank you in advance~

68 z28. All original. I had my local shop remove the motor and sent it to Jerry for rebuild.
I intended to supervise the reassembly with the mechanic. The mechanic was diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a cell phone. He will be ok but is out for at least several months.

So now I will do it and use their resources and a helper they will provide. I have gone through his bags   I have everything organized and ready to go. Except this bolt. I don't recognize it. It was in the mix. It might not even go with the car.

Thank you~

Looks like a bolt for mounting the alternator.  I seem to remember they use a stud with a spacer in '68.  In '69 the alternator was mounted on the opposite side with a large bracket that cover the top of the alternator.   ???

With all the views and only one comment, as I suspected, I'll bet it's not a part for this particular Camaro.

Thank everyone for the eyeballs. I'll post a pic here when done~

I've seen those types of bolts on Chevrolets before, but my memory is not reminding me which cars, but they are used on some cars for retaining either the water pump, or the thermostat housing, and the additional thread/nut above is for retaining the ground for the battery... to ground to the engine.

The distortion in the photo makes it difficult to tell the size and whether the threads are std on both ends or fine on one end.
Also is the washer a lock washer or a flat washer or a phenolic (insulating) washer.
IMHO The spacer looks like the one for a smog pump.

@firstgenaddict - The bolt is one piece. The threads are fine on the nut side and standard on the opposite. The washer is a flat washer.

@169INDY - The two bolts listed in the AIM for the pump are standard style bolts. A picture of a complete ready to install pump system is pictured on Jerry's website on the link below and you can see the two bolt heads.

http://z28camaro.com/rare-nos-parts/

I have done 68 engine installations before. However, I have never mounted an air pump before. So I "assumed" it was part of that assembly when I first saw it. When I put together all my info, pics, AIM pages and so for the project I realized I had this extra bolt. I'm not a fan of leftover parts. I have searched and searched with no success so I posted the picture here.

@69Z8--RS - I'm with you about the familiarity and at the moment my brain remembers it as possibly a power steering bracket  bolt on a 68 SS 396 Chevelle. A car I had 40 years ago.

In the end, I greatly appreciate the help. I am beginning to feel that it somehow just found its way into the mechanics box of sort trays.

I was NOT referring to Items 1 thru 7.

Look lower. At the Upper Bolt-Stud Combination fastener on the Upper Passenger side leg of the water pump.

THe Spool goes behind the Air pump bracket & the Fine thread (UNF) extension is for the Ground Battery Cable.

The Fastener is not called out due to it being part of the engine assembly.

Got Pics of "your" Installation?

I bet you are 100% right. I have been looking in the wrong spot. I didn't pick up the 3d extension aspect of the drawing and was using page AIM page 152 12 a5 as my reference for the neg cable. When I realized what you pointed out I went to my photos and found a pic of the bolt installed prior to the pump bracket. Now installation pic yet. The shop says they will have a bay available in a couple weeks. I'll post pics in this thread. No left over parts~

Studs - Hex Collar
AMK

Lot of choices out there,

Glad I conveyed my thoughts.

I Did my 302 (68) Smog removed and had to source a shorter stud

That does appear to be the bolt used for the lower Air Pump bracket. I checked on mine and it does have the GND cable going to it. The thick spacer on the other side of the bracket to the block is painted Chevy orange. The AIM does not show the GND connection.

Saw that on pg 151 but it doesn't show the same bolt/bracket combo as in the one on pg 81 since the air pump is not depicted.

The AIM View is "Typical" and likely will not show every possible configuration. (i.e. Some V8's got AIR pump and Others did not?)
