hood hinge and latch bolt finish
« on: September 25, 2020, 04:43:20 PM »
Doing cosmentic restoration of 68 SS,  somewhere along the way I read that that the hood hinge and latches were light silver color and used a caliper paint that was recommended,  Now after seeing other photos and further reading it appears the Cast Blast Cast Iron color is more appropriate, going to remove and start repainting today.  My question is, what finish is on the bolts?  Thanks in advance for any help.

They were Manganese phosphate or some say zinc phosphate.
I have never found Zinc phosphate plate as dark as manganese and the originals are pretty dark with larger crystaline surface

Here are some originals.

Thanks for the photo, looks like the darker color is the way to go.    What about the bolts, were they the same finish or were they a black phosphate or zinc or???
Thanks
Steve

The hood to hinge bolts, hinge to fender bolts and hood latch to hood bolts were all manganese (black) phosphate.
