Chev Muscle Docs/NCRS Data Report
« on: September 15, 2020, 02:19:26 PM »
I post every once in a while trying to assist members. If anyone received a data report listing dealer zone and code and no dealer name. Let me know and I’ll check my database to see if I can assist.

Gary, I have the same information. See attached address block from a 72 Camaro. At this point we need to ensure Clayton was around in 69 to ensure there was not a different dealer using that same zone and code. See attached ad from March 12, 1969. Therefore, yes Clayton was zone 31 dealer 073 for your 69 Camaro.

Thanks Paul.  I appreciate the confirmation, and I'm amazed that you can find newspaper articles from that long ago to confirm information~   :)

Paul,
Having a conversation with NCRS (Muscle Car Docs) about a disputed Ship to dealer. The report they sent me says my car was shipped to Warnock Chevrolet Dealer 332 Zone 02 on April 28,1969. This is for a 69 Indy Pacecar. It was sold from Marvin Chevrolet in Cheshire CT in September 1969. I know...maybe a dealer transfer. I have paperwork for the car (original bill of sale, new car title application, etc).

Here's what is confusing me. I if I go on the NCRS search engine and search Warnock it comes back with 3 references all zone 02, but two are Dealer 332 and one is 329. all from the same source in 1994 and 1995, No actual GM document referenced.
If I search Marvin Chevrolet it returns with Zone 2, Dealer 332. Hummm. How could they both be 332 at the same point in time?
So on to Newpapers.com. Marvin Chevrolet advertises in the local newspapers around Connecticut between January 22, 1968. The final was March 3, 1972. At that point it became Terry Chevrolet.
On to Warnock Chevrolet in Morristown NJ. The Secretary of State Business Division of Revenue shows incorporation on September 27, 1984. The advertisements start October 16, 1985. The dealership was sold in 2011. I could find no information that Warnock existed in 1969.
Could you or someone confirm if any information exists to confirm both dealers numbers?
Thanks a bunch in advance,
Rich

The NCRS data report come from reading OLD punch cards.   The data they can read is:   DATE, Dealer NO, and ZONE No..

If they are giving you 'Warnock chevrolet', then I believe they are using the NCRS data base for that information and the NCRS dealer/zone data base is populated from information that 'members' key in, which is inconsistent and possibly in error...

My suggestion:   Use the date, Dealer No, and Zone number provided, but do your own determination for what dealership that actually was on the date your car was shipped.

And yes it was certainly possible for a dealer to dealer transfer (especially within a specific zone)...

It is not punch cards, but data printouts that they have scanned.
The dealer list they use isn't from members but from two GM dealer list booklets.
Obviously, they are in the wrong decade....

I believe the only reason they use member info is to help fill in their own missing data.

In May 2014, NCRS reported my car in error (incorrect zone) and I knew the correct zone.  I contacted Roy Sinor, in charge of the NCRS data reports at that time, and after some time passing information back and forth, he stated it was an error reading the 'microfiche'... so I was mistaken referring to it as a damaged punch card... but it was also not reading 'printouts'...
I suppose I was recalling instances from my own career where damaged 'punch cards' caused issues!

REF:  Roy wrote in an email to me:
"Gary, I've been working on it from my end. the zone is #31 the dealer is #73, we still do not know the name of the dealer we think it could start with a c. The microfiche is damaged and very hard to read what we originally thought was 21 we know for sure is 31.  The dealer directory does not have the dealer name for #73.  Can you get anything produced from GM that shows 31-073 is Joe Clayton Chevrolet? If you could we can take it to GM and have them update their directory.  I'm also struggling with zone 31 I think it is WV, TN area."

In a subsequent email, Roy wrote:

"Note: You should also go to the Dealer Code Database and check that the information that you have is also included in our online database. It is important to understand that the information contained in the Dealer Code Database was contributed by members and other sources and was not supplied by GM and is therefore not 100% correct. If you wish you may update the Dealer Code Database with the information supplied in your Shipping Data Report, which ultimately will improve the accuracy of the Dealer Code Database. From time to time GM reorganized their Dealer Zones. Therefore, a Dealer Zone and Dealer number applicable for 1963 might have changed for 1964.

with kind regards,
Roy Sinor
Chevy Muscle Docs Historical Document Services Administrator
"

I later received an updated NCRS report for my car with correct zone/dealer information from Marilyn Heitzman (who took over for Roy I believe).

It's microfiche of the printouts. They were scanned and OCR'd.

Paul, I know you have tried on this one before, but my 69 Z/28 came from dealer 833 in Zone 23 (Oklahoma).

I always suspected Seltzer (in Yukon, just W of OKC).   Seltzer was bought by Alan Merrill in early 70's.  Merrill is dealer 594 in Zone 23.  That tells me they didn't likely keep the number that had been assigned to Seltzer.

Seltzer did sell a ZL-1.    #61.  CRG shows it as vin 124379N642927  Fathom green.  I could have sworn it was white.

Have you seen the NCRS report on that car?  If it is 833, that would confirm Seltzer is my selling dealer.

The other one I suspected is Scott Chevrolet in downtown OKC.    There was also a "Scott's Chevlrolet" somewhere in OK, but not the same dealer.

Thanks for any help.

Nothing new on my end for dealer 23-833. Seltzer is dealer 23-835. Correct on Merrill who took over location from Seltzer and is dealer 23-594. Scott Chevrolet in Oklahoma City: 23-830 and Scotty's Chevrolet-Olds in Tishomingo OK: 23-835, must have inherited the dealer code from Seltzer after they had been closed a few years.
