interior mirror stem paint color
« on: September 09, 2020, 09:28:16 PM »
working on a cosmetic restoration of 68 SS convertible interior and looking for help with the finish on the mirror stem and the top releases at the ends of the windhield upper trim.  it appears to be a painted finish and not a plated finish.  if it is painted any help on color and manufacturer would be greatly apreciated.

68-69 had a satin finish plating.  Here's an example, not sure if this is what you mean by top releases.  I've no idea if the hooks and knuckles had the same satin plating.  The mirror stem probably had the same finish to comply with the regulations, although the one linked below seems a bit shiny.  As we know, repro parts aren't always totally accurate.  If you don't know the full history on the car, a PO could have painted the parts.

Amen to the satin finish plating. Not easy for some chrome platers to duplicate effectively, too. My Z11's are original, satin, thank goodness they are in good shape -

Thanks to you both.   I will have to do some very careful cleaning and hopefully it is a plated finish on them.

I recently did a few trials using glass beads at about 20# with a #6 nozzel at aprox 10" just dusting and it gave a nice satin finish, I am going to do a weather test on the part to see whether or not the chrome is affected.  PERSONALLY I doubt that little pressure removed new chrome.
