New 69 Z28

I have been looking for a long time and think Ive found a good one. This is a very original 69 Z with all born with driveline. Thanks to this site for a lot of helpful info from the experts. I will post more pics but have been really pleased so far with the original numbers items still on the car and the condition. I don't think the community has ever seen this car as its been in one family since 1970. I bought it from the individual that purchased it from this family in 2008. He says he has only driven it 3X since 08 and I believe it as we had to demo the garage door to get it out. I did get copies of all of the original titles, PoP, tag registrations, owners manual etc. Seems very legit. A fresh look as it is a flat hood no gauge car with aftermarket wheels. I did get all of the original matching YH wheels.

A few more pics I am taking along the way. Its a very clean unmolested car that drives like a dream. Ive owned several 427 68-69s and like to drive them. I have never owned or driven a 302 car. I have fell in love with this motor and prob put 500 miles on it already. Have just about convinced myself to build a spare 302 and switch out to drive and enjoy. I have a spare 1970 M21. Its an original 3.73 M20 car now. I like the old school look with the wheels, flat hood and Garnet red. Just something different. One odd thing on this car, It has the factory 4 leaf rear and what appears to be the original front springs both match the condition of the rest of the underside. This car really sits lower front and rear than most all other Zs Ive seen. Including the original survivors that should have the same spring drop for age and mileage. My 427 cars I would use a light duty small block spring and it sits similar to that?

In the photo, it sits 'correctly to my eyes for a Z28', but you can measure the rocker height to ground and compare to the factory specs to determine if springs are sagging...

Your Z's stance looks fairly similar to this pic of my X77 around 1976. Stock springs, stock YH rallys with F70-15 Goodyears front, H60-15 rears. The only non-stock items on the suspension at this point were the Mr. Gasket traction bars (which did nothing to alter the ride height).

Your X33 is a great find, beautiful car. Enjoy the daylights out of it !

A couple of questions for the experts. Im working to get as much of the smaller items back original. 2 things for now, more to come. (1) I have read several threads and am still confused. Is black or silver grill correct? Mine is black. Has never been painted and looks original. (2) Without the build sheet to verify is the NK1 comfort grip steering wheel factory possible on a 05A car? Thanks.

Bug eye Z/28s had argent [silver] grilles and headlamp bezels w/body color surround. Original argent grilles were molded in an off-white plastic. Later service replacement grilles were molded in black plastic. RS Z/28s had black grilles except cars painted black; those were argent.

The NK1 Cushioned-Rim [not comfort grip] steering wheel became an option as of April.

The front grille appears to be black.  Since it is not an RS it should be silver.

From my experience the grille was gray with the perimeter the color of the car.  I ordered a 1969 Z28 in the fall of 1968 in Burnish Brown and it came like I explained previously.  I tried to attach a picture of that car and the file was too large to post.  I'll try to PM you with the picture.

Grille is actually Argent Silver, sprayed over a light (opaque white) molded base. Surround was indeed body color. The SS models are noted here, too, as their grille colors were handled slightly differently. If you have any original headlight bezels from an open headlight '69 (not the early SS black ones with chrome highlights), they are a great color guide for the grille. Silver grilles were superseded with black grilles very early - I replaced mine in '78 due to an altercation with an Audi rear bumper, the only grille available from Chevy at that point was black. Even with that, they were only $40.00 some odd dollars, should have bought a few dozen of them. Oh well - hindsight is always 20/20.

Here is a silver grill I put on my 69.  The base plastic color is a light gray, here you can see the Garnet red over spray.



I picked this up at a swap meet and had to fix a bunch of cracks and missing sections with JB weld (color was a good match too!) You can see the remains of the Argent silver painted on the center of the grill.



Then paint the center with Argent silver (kinda the same as Rally wheel paint), remember to paint the headlight covers the same Argent. The grill surround and upper stiffener gets body color.
