Alternate Valve Lash Adjustment Procedure
« on: August 09, 2020, 12:04:46 AM »

Hello everyone,

New to this forum. i recently acquired a 1969 Z28 Camaro 100% stock. I've read the procedure posted by John Hinckley and Duke Williams and am just curious. Has anyone actually adjusted to .026"? Mine aren't making noise but I have the need to bring everything up to date, You all know...oil change everywhere front to back and give her some TLC.

Thanks for any incite you all can provide!

Yes, I adjusted my old 69 Z to the specs as laid out by John and Duke. AND have adjusted my solid lifter LT1 to their modified specs as well.
The valve train is not near as noisy due to less slack thus it HAS to be easier on the head seats as well as the camshaft by allowing the valves to come to rest on the seat using the ramps by taking up the slack of the original stamped rocker arms which, IF NOT MISTAKEN, have an ACTUAL ratio of 1.37 NOT the 1.5 advertised.
Start at TDC set the two indicated  and then just pull the engine over 90deg with a breaker bar...  adjust the next 2 valves indicated etc etc.

I use that procedure on my 1969 Z/28, except my rocker arms are actually 1.5:1 (Howards Cams Long Slot Rockers) so I use a lash of .032".  At .026" I was getting about 7" of vacuum and 150-155 compression in all cylinders. I chased my tail with getting it to run right until I found my rockers were 1.5:1 and I adjusted lash to .032". I now get 9" of vacuum at idle and compression of 180-185 in all cylinders, it idles much better and noticeably more power than when I adjusted them to .026". Just my experience.

Thank you so much for the responses. I will proceed as noted in the alternate procedure as now I'm feeling more comfortable with it. to my knowledge the engine is 100% stock so the procedure should be acceptable. Guess I'll know once I have the covers off and can look for sure.

best regards,

Hank
