67 cowl plenum air cleaner
« on: July 28, 2020, 01:37:45 PM »
Hey
I’m a new guy sorry if I’m the wrong place.
I have a 67 rs/ss I’d like to put a cowl plenum air cleaner on.  NOS is huge money if you can even find one.  I see 2 different aftermarket that range in price and limited pictures.  Has anyone got info on where to get a decent looking one?  Has anyone tried to build their own or use one from an older impala, etc?

Thanks so much for your time.

I am happy with this source; Quality is great built by hand of steel.
Quality Costs.

Really good pic of Nelson's '68 recreation on page 6 of this thread - if I had the money and was inclined to add one, this would be it. Superlative reproduction in my opinion - I'm pretty sure he makes both '67 and '68 versions (alcove for the smog pump). Really wish I had bought the NOS complete cleaner for $1100.00 at the Pigeon Forge USCC show some years back, but I thought that was outrageous at the time. Really smart -

Hey 169indy
I called Nelson and left a message.  His machine cut off quick.  I’m thinking he’s the type that doesn’t deal w email or text... or even humans.?  Did you have any other way to contact him or have the same experience?
Got a picture of the filter on your car?

Sent Nelson a letter as he won’t return my calls.  Has anyone dealt with him recently or know if he still makes these air cleaners?  Has anyone used anything else worth looking at??

Thank you all!

Boys,
FWIW, there was a guy who was reproducing the cowl air cleaner set ups for the vintage full size NASCAR team cars. Maybe it was the same guy you are referring to on here?

Hey crossboss
Who is this man you speak of?  By any chance do you have any contact info or a direction I can go to look for him or any one else who may make these?   Plugging in Chevy cowl plenum air cleaner gets me old links to this site for Nelson and his nice repo.  There is an ok looking copy by D & R classics and a not so nice fiberglass one sold by heartbeat city.  This set up looks like the best way to get cooler air intake rather than the big chrome tube with a filter on the end.  I really like the look of the originals on the z28s that ordered them.  Awesome how they figured that out back then.

Thanks for any help and your time!

Phil,
Sorry, I do not know his name. I saw a reference to the repro cowl induction air cleaner set ups for the vintage NASCAR team cars over at the Boss 302 site a while back. One of the members was restoring a Torino or a Galaxie race car. I can post a topic over there and see what comes of it.
