Is 1969 the 'best' year in the 20th Century?
« on: July 27, 2020, 11:20:56 PM »
Boys,
An informal poll. Do you agree that 1969 is the 'best' year in the 20th Century? Historians say it is because:

1969 lives on in my memory for all those reasons, PLUS it was the last full year of my bachelorhood!

1970 was also a great year due to all those reasons, pLUS it was the first year of my marriage! :)
(i had to add that one in case my wife ever reads this)... :)

I would be unable to narrow down 1969 being the best year in the 20th century, but I would definitely say that the 1960's were the best decade in the century.  All the reasons you listed make it so, plus all my favorite teams were dominant at some point if not for the whole decade:  Yankees, Browns, Celtics, and Notre Dame football.  Sports and cars were both so much more appealing in the 60's than any decade since.

For one year 1967 stands out. A lot of good looking vehicles from that year, before large marker lights and more safety equipment.

If ya overlook the negatives, yeah, as far as cars are concerned, 1969 was awesome !
If for no other reason, the 1st EVER Universal Holley Double Pumpers were finally introduce to the public,
List 4776 Universal 600 CFM through List 4781 Universal 850 CFM,
after Chevy had enjoyed a ~18 month exclusive to having them,
in the List 4295 585 (600) CFM 2nd Design 302 Crossram and List 4296 850 CFM ZL1 and 2nd Design L88
first developed by GM & Bill Howell & 'the team' in very late 1967 or very early 1968, imho.
Can you imagine...  you have the Double Pumper... and no one else does...  haven't even seen it...
wouldn't really see it or know it when they were right there in front of ya...
Supposedly so 'new', they even created a 'fitment problem' on the ZL-1 with the L88 Air Cleaner Base Plate.
Below May 1970 Hot Rod Ad mentions introduction on the Z-28 Camaro... a bit misleading,
as the list 4295's, the 1st ever Double Pumpers, were the 2nd Design for the GM # 3940077 'Induction Kit'
originaly released with the short lived 1st Design List 4210 Single Squirter Mechanical Secondary Holley Carburetors.

Phat,
No argument 1969 was a tremendous year for performance cars. Every manufacturer had a home run, and even some real 'exotics'. ZL-1s, 440-6, Hemis, and Boss 429s. Same holds true on the carbs…'Dominators', Holley 3 barrels, Autoline Inlines, and 'Six Packs'. Mind blowing...

I got my drivers license in 69. The high school parking lot looked like a muscle car cruise in. Big block chevys, fords and mopars with tri fives covered also. Before class burnouts were common and occasional open headers. 8 track players were the rage and if you did not have Cragers you wanted them.
