Air Cleaner Housing ID Help
« on: May 15, 2020, 08:37:15 PM »
I would appreciate help identifying the specific applications for the air cleaner housing in the attached pictures.  It is obviously off a 327/250 HP, but is it considered factory for a 1967 & 1968?  And is there other information I should know about it before I attempt to sell it on Ebay?  Also, any assistance on its value would be very helpful.

Thank you for any help you can give me!!

Seems to be from a Chevelle, Camaro 327's were either 210 HP 2V  or 275 HP 4V.

Is there a visible part number on the black and gold decal?   Looks like a 68 or later.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any numbers on the tag or anywhere else on the housing.  But thanks for mentioning it.

1965 was the last year that Chevrolet produced the 327 in 250 and 300 hp optional versions (for most cars including Corvettes).  Beginning with 1966 models, they produced a 327/275 hp for most cars, and the 300 hp version for Corvettes (base engine as they no longer produced the 250 hp); the 327/300 hp version continued in 1967 as a Corvette base engine (but no other models to my knowledge).

(And of course Camaros were NOT in production until the 1967 model year)...

Were heat risers in use in 65?  ( not sure what they are actually called- the valve on snorkel to pull air from around manifold on cold start).  I thought they came later.  My 68 327 doesn’t have one. If so,  Cover could be from different base or repo decal at some point?

From the Emissions Report:
"The air cleaners for 68-69 AIR equipped cars were different from the Controlled Combustion System air cleaners due to the ThermAC system on the CSS air cleaners. "

Undoubtedly '68 (or earlier) automatic, not a manual trans, not '69 and later due to the hose exit on the Therm AC valve. The cleaner would have appeared on 4 bbl SB  applications up to and including 295 Hp L48 cars. L48 lid could have been chromed for the dress-up SS package, same lid.

1969 and later SB automatic cleaners like this have the hose bib turn to the passenger (left) side of the snorkel, not the drivers (right side) - heat stove on '68's is on the driver's side manifold, '69's are passenger. hose exits are designed to clip under the air cleaner base without passing under the snorkel.

I know this post is a couple of years old, but if you still have old photos of the air cleaner, can you post a photo of the black and gold decal on the side of the air cleaner?  Thanks!
