As I understand/recall... ALL early '69 Z28s were fitted with the 'standard' chambered exhaust, but by the end of '68/early 69, it became an option and the dual in/dual out transverse muffler became standard (due to noise laws in some states like PA ?). Then a bit later (May '69?) the chambered system was dropped as an option. Around this same time, or a bit later, resonators were added to the 'transverse system' to further muffle the exhaust note, and I think the chrome tips were added at that time?? I'm sure William probably has all the dates and details..

There was an interim Z/28 exhaust system from Nov '68 through mid April '69. Deep-tone '68 muffler, no resonators. Still too loud so from that point on Z/28s received the standard N10 muffler/resonator system. Chromed tailpipes as of May 19.

I recall a post that included color copies of the exhaust system drawings for each type, very informative.
EDIT: found link to that thread -

Read the recall letter... Dated August 22 1969 -
YES A SEPT built 69 Z28 would have chambered exhaust... Gardner is the closest but even they do not make the pipes from LAMINATED PIPE like GM did.
