Holly choke
« on: December 17, 2019, 10:05:55 PM »
I've got a 750 Holly with a mechanical choke. How is that converted to work with the intake manifold set up on the 610 intake. Or is electric the way to go?

Unless you are trying to stay original the electric is simple and works well. I am not sure the choke parts for the older carbs will bolt on the newer 750,s.

Thanks, it's a older carb from the 70's. Just wondering if the mechanical hardware was removed if the rod from the manifold wound connect. Just trying to figure it out before I buy the parts.

Holley sells a conversion kit to convert from mechanical to electric. The part number varies by carburetor, but go on Summit Racing and you should be able to find it. They DON'T sell a kit to convert from mechanical to automatic, so if you're looking to go "original", you'll need to buy a 3923289 DZ (4053) carb. They're available reproduction but they're not entirely "correct". Read about the differences HERE.

Great, thanks, looks like it'll be electric.

Do you need the choke to work or do you want the rod for aesthetics? I just had a 1972 Holley 800 DP/ spreadbore with a mechanical choke rebuilt by a individual the builds racing/performance carbs. He as well as the man that built my motor(431ci) said a choke is not necessary. I ask because the rebuilder returned all the choke part with the carb. There is a lever that rides on a shaft that the choke rod rides attaches to and operates the butterfly. On my carb the butterfly and operating rod has been removed. I reinstalled the rod from the manifold to the aforementioned lever so it apears the choke is connected and working. If you remove the air breather the smart people will notice the disception.

As an aside I drove 355 small block with single plane tall victor jr. 306 duration 540 lift mechanical camshaft and 750DP on the street for years with no choke and it started and ran fine. Never tried it in 30 degree weather though.

Thanks, just looking for function. Car will be a driver in NC. Trying to keep it as close to original as I can but my pockets aren't that deep.
