I don't think I have ever seen a cowl induction air cleaner seal installed quite like that before.

Nor I, Charley!   :)

That fella must be really smart to figure it goes like that...  It would be VERY INTERESTING to hear his version of what that air cleaner seal does...  :)

Firewall blackout was one of the last operations, done at Fisher Body. The body was already painted, sanded, polished. No need to write the paint code on the firewall.

Interesting to see an invoice for this 1969 Z28 being from a dealer on the east coast, but showing a California black plate.

Well anyone can bring a 60's car into California now, and registration it to Black plates. You just have to have find plates with the right letter designation and the right 69 sticker to go by. I am surprised he was able to run the XEY, that seems to early for 69 IMO. It costs an extra $50 a year to do so, plus the initial fee, which seems to go up every year. Not worth it in my opinion, especially when you consider the plates themselves can run 100-350 depending on condition and lettering. Best way to do it is if the car came with them originally, then it is just a norma registration cost, which is still expensive IMO. Just cost me $140 to register the white 69...😳

Did the license plates on 60's vintage remain with the car when it exchanged hands ?

If the person never decided to switch them. But if they lost a plate or they got stolen, they would have to apply for a new set. I wouldn't say it's rare to have the original black plates on a car, but with how often the cars have been switching hands in recent years, it is less common now a days to see them still on the car. Also some sellers would/will hold onto the plates as a memento, so another way they got separated from the car.

On California black license plates issued between 1963 - 1969, the year was stamped on the top right hand side of the  plate.  The California DMV has an on-line function where you can look up the license fees for a particular vehicle if you know the license number and the last 5 digits of the VIN number:

GMAD it may say that in the general verbage about the year being stamped in. 1956 and lower they were stamped in each year or had a metal tab. For the black plates specifically I have only ever seen "63" stamped in them. Please post a Pic of a black plate with another year stamped in, would be news to me.

My prior posting was really about that the new California black license plates do not have any date stamped on the right side:
