1969 cowl tag
« on: December 03, 2019, 02:10:43 AM »
Howdy all,

New member here and wanted to ask a couple of questions about a car I recently purchased. I had someone more knowledgeable than me look at the car before the deal to get his thoughts on it.

It is a “69 RS Z/28”, but originally was not a RS car, and most likely not a Z/28, but a very tastefully done car in my opinion. If I am reading the cowl tag correctly, it is the correct hugger orange, (white Z/28 stripes) with standard black interior (now black deluxe). I think this is an early Norwood car from the size of the tag, which I read on here. I can’t seem to post an image of it.

There is a supposed re-stamped 302, Muncie 4 speed and 4.11 12 bolt in this car, but I have not had time to dig into this and crawl under it yet to try to verify anything. Is there anything in particular that could point to this being a factory Z/28? The only thing I can easily see that could help any is the small dual exhaust hanger plate behind the driver’s side rear wheel, but I guess this could have been added also.

Just trying to find a way to confirm, which I may never be able to do!

I bought this as a nicely done, but non-original car, so my feelings won’t be hurt either way.

Thanks,

Tony

Welcome to CRG Tony!
The visual ID's described in the link below can hint at what the car may have left the factory as, but shouldn't be taken as proof. As you mentioned above, their presence today doesn't mean they weren't added by a previous owner/restorer.

Tim,

Thanks for the welcome.

Bullitt, he simply looked at it for a decent/not decent car for the price, and tried to confirm it was a genuine RS and/or Z/28. Could not say yes or no on the Z/28.

Thanks,

Tony

So the seller represented it as an original RS Z/28 and your friend concluded it was a nice car that was not a RS, but he did not know if it was an original Z/28. If I am following you correctly, you then purchased the car at the sellers price still not knowing if it was a Z/28 or just a clone?

Hopefully you can post a pic of the tag. You can always post the vin, and/or a link to the ad and we may be able to see past sales of the car, or it may be in the data base already.

Thanks for the replies. I will eventually get it down on how to post pics. Working on it.

The seller did not know if it was a genuine Z/28, and knew it was not a genuine RS, as he added the RS equipment. VIN is 124379N517816
