The only 1968 Camaro Z28 convertible ever made was used as the pace car for the SCCA Can-Am event held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin on Sunday, September 1, 1968. This was the first round of the six round Canadian-American Challenge Cup and it was won by Denny Hulme in his McLaren M8A Chevrolet. It was driven on the pace laps by Stirling Moss, the famous British race car driver. He drove the pace cars for most of the Can Am events at the time, including the previous year in the Camaro Cherokee.
Much has been written on this particular one of one car built for Chevrolet General Manager Elliott "Pete" Estes in the summer of 1968. The car still exists and has recently had the graphics that appear in the photos reapplied to the doors.
