On many restored cars, the rear bumper guards don't fit all that well, possibly due to the guards, the bumper, or both being reproduction or later NOS. Not so easy to find detailed close-up pictures of that area on known survivors either; there were some on Chick's thread of Skip's late HO car, but PhotoBucket seems to have deliberately blurred images for non-paid members now (Grrrr); can you post a picture of yours so we can see how it looks?

My original guards on my X77 are not a really tight fit, either. The cutout where the guard "wraps" the bumper is a little oversized. I have a set of NOS guards (since the very early 80's), but I've never mounted them to see if they are better or worse. At any rate, the factory guards are by no means perfect -

Steve

I did a quick search on my computer for a photo of my rear guards...  The attached is the best I could find without going to make a new photo of the guard/bumper interface.  I hope this helps.   I can try to get a better photo tomorrow if someone wants it..

I have a pair of GM originals from my car, and a pair of reproductions. I will pull them out when next at the storage unit and see if there's any obvious differences in the bumper 'notch' when side-by-side. May not help in your original question, but could suggest why a lot of restored cars have poor fit in that area.

Ok so I looked at my white 69, and there is a little gap where they wrap over the top. But on my red 69 they fit pretty snug all the way around. I am pretty sure they have never been off the car though. I don't have the cars together where I can compare, and see if it is the guards themselves or shape of the bumper. My guess would be the guards are repro and are not spot on like the originals.

The front guards seem to be the worst of them to get to look good. My 68 has factory rear guards. Original guards, bumper & body panels to that car. Still not perfect. Goes to show General Motors was just building cars...Joe

Hey Joe post a pic, and try to show where they are off. I am curious if it is in the same spot as my white 69, even though it is a different year. thank you

I'll have to ask Sheri where that hard drive is. The shop is too much of a mess right now to take other pictures....Joe

I have GM NOS rear guards/pads and an original '69 bumper that has been rechromed.  The fit is tight as it should be.

If you see poor fitting rear guards they are probably repro.  I tried the repro guards and the fit on the bumper was horrible.  They were also heavier/thicker than original GM.
