1967 SS350 Smog pump info help needed
« on: September 16, 2019, 01:11:59 AM »
I would like to know several things,
1> what is the correct P/N for a 67 Camaro smog pump for V-8?
I have read the article here on CRG and they DO NOT mention a smog pump part mumber just discuss the date code
the number off of my 1 owner ss350 is 5696856 this is the number stamped on the case (not on the date pad)
I also have a smog pump from a 67 camaro that the case has 5696211 stamped on it,,,,

I am unable to find any info about the case numbers or what/where is the P/N??
Thanks in advance

I have searched this forum for 45 mins now,,,no one has asked this question is seems
my parts catalog dated July 68 N0. 681A has no smog info in it

The cast number you are looking at is the part number for the "front cover", not the entire pump.  You see them for sale incorrectly stating that or the rear plate cast number is the entire pump part number.

FWIW Saginaw sold those pumps to Ford. Ferrari, and other manufacturers, similar to their power steering pumps.

Per the AIM, they used 3 pumps in 67, and the pump assembly numbers were 5696468 for the L30 and L48, 74800308 for the L35, and everything else used the 5696104.

The front cover cast number on the L30/48 5696468 pump is 5696582.  You can also tell that pump by the rear tubes.  In your AIM look at UPC K19 Sheet A10 and you can better see how the tube that went to the air cleaner base has a bend.  I think all the other pumps had three straight tubes.  If you look for a pump with a front cover 5696582, that one rear tube with a bend, and a 4 bolt pulley flange, and acceptable date code range, you should be good.

Does your third picture in your first post show a pump with a 5696582 front cover?  On a side note, is your oil fill tube painted black or chrome?

So your saying my smog pump is not original to my car? (or at least the front casing)?

oil fill tube is indeed chrome as is the "S" cap

Thanks by the way for taking time to help me out,,

Not sure how a part # will help you.  It's not on the pump.
Pete's info on the differences is good, but there were many other smog pumps used on other car models. I have no idea how to tell them apart.

ok so the smog pump P/N is not on the pump,,I see,,,
so I guess my question is, how would someone like Jerry M or some judge at a show determine if
mine was original equipment?

If the pump doesn't actually have the OE part # 5696468 on it, how do we identify the correct pump for an application?

When I ask in this thread http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=20342.msg184578#msg184578 I was told my pump is for a corvette and not a Camaro.

Yes, there is a part number listed in the AIM. But, if I'm understand Kurt and Pete's L48 the number is not on the actual pump.

I'm wondering if the pumps had an ink stamp or label broadcast code, to indicate the correct application?  Looking at the AIM, they were not sent to the plant as an assembly.  Just a guess on my part.  I don't have Jerry's book to see if any mention of these.  I'll see if I have any survivor photos.

My apologies,  Kurt, Peters L45, I meant to say, If I understand you correctly, the AIM part number is NOT on the pump.

That's what I understood you meant.  I have a few pumps I'll check later, but I don't recall the actual AIM part number being stamped or cast anywhere on the pump.

It's like the part # for an engine assembly, it's not on the part.
Assuming it is the correct configuration, the date is the only thing that ties it to a car.
