register question how many years gen 1 Camaro mfg
« on: February 16, 2019, 11:28:24 PM »
Hi, the question was how many years was the Gen 1 Camaro manufactured and the correct answer per the webpage was 3. Actually the correct answer should be 4 as the gen 1 1969 Camaro was carried over to 1970 basically unchanged, and sold as a 1970 Camaro . Gen 2 Camaro came out as a 1970 1/2 model mid year, Early because of management defection to Ford

First Camaro a 1969 Z28 purchased new , Currently have a 1967 SS/RS with period modifications for autocrossing, lowered, heavier springs, red Koni adjustable shocks, heavier front swaybar and rear sway bar basically mounted like factory

ACTUALLY Charles...  :) ...    Even though the 1969 Camaro model year was longer than usual, ALL of the 1969-appearing Camaros produced from 9-68 thru 12-69 were ALL 1969 models!~  :)

If your original question was :  How many calendar years were the 1st gen Camaros produced, the answer would have been 4 calendar years:   1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969!  :)  but the number of different models was only 3.

I think the 70 model delay was parts problems not management.

I'd be interested to hear your story behind your statement that 'management defection to ford' affected the timing of that transition???

I think the 70 model delay was parts problems not management.
Specifically, difficulty in stamping the new model 1/4 panels at the Hamilton, Ohio plant.

That is always what I had heard or read somewhere ko-lek-tor; that the delay in producing the 1970 Camaro was due to GM not being satisfied with the early body panels and had to find a way to produce them to meet the standard GM wanted.

JohnZ wrote:
The extended 69 production and the delay of introduction of the '70 Camaro was not purposeful, nor was it related to labor problems; it was late because the quarter panel draw dies failed during final die tryout and had to be rebuilt from scratch. Fisher Body had lots of troubles drawing the 1970 quarter panels without wrinkles and splits. They attempted to correct the problems by modifying the draw dies during final tryout but the problems got worse instead of better. Fisher finally had to redesign/rebuild the draw dies, which delayed the launch by 4-5 months. Chevrolet decided to extend the 1969 model, which created a wild scramble, as this meant extending part supplier contracts for the '69 (suppliers had already committed their facilities to other business), finding alternate capacity for '69 parts, etc. The PR department attempted to spin the delay in a different direction for public consumption as GM never publicly admitted any internal problems or failures, especially within Fisher Body, its biggest manufacturing Division, with the biggest tooling budget. But the delay of the 1970 Camaro was a black eye for Fisher Body Die Engineering, as it was the first production launch delay that was ever laid at their feet.

The argument over whether a late 69 Camaro (and Corvette for that matter... as the 69 Corvette extended production even further than the Camaro) is mainly a question of semantics.

All the VIN's indicate 1969 model year.   They DID have to comply with 1970 Federal standards which is why only the Camaros built after Aug. 1 recieved the blue mylar vin decal in the door, as well as the stamped vin on top of the dash.  Pre August cars do not have the decal in the door.

Someone enlighten me if I am wrong, but I believe that mylar decal was the ONLY Federal standard that applied to 70 models that did not apply to 69 models.

Did one decal on the door make it a 70 model?   Does it really matter?

Hey Lynn, that sticker started in September 1 of 69, not august. You can see 08E cars that had the sticker, (to be delivered in September) but none prior.

No, I can't.

That's a conflicted statement. 08E would be August built, not September.

To answer the OPs question, it is 3 model years as mentioned by several other members. As for the delay for the 1970 model, it was my understanding that there were several reasons as to why. 1. a strike at GM, 2. quarter panel issues as discussed, 3. Personnel changes from Ford's firing of Bunkie, and other staff that followed, and some returning back to GM. The 1969 production models were extended  just like the 1987 Buick GN, and Monte Carlos were because of last minute demand and late tooling changes for the 1988's. As for the sticker in the door jabs, that was a requirement for all manufacturers by the Feds conforming to model year 1970 production, and or after September 1969 builds.
Just another T/A fanatic. Current lifelong projects:

Understood that is why I stated 08E to be delivered September of 69. Seems clear

Crossboss,
It was the quarters as JohnZ stated. But I don't know the Corvette went long.

There is one anomaly. There was a potential that the 69 Camaro was going to be extended into the 1970 model year. There were some documentation about this distributed and some promo pictures were produced. But they decided to just extend the model year.
The Venezuelan plant did not know about the change in plans and some late 69's are actually VIN'd as 1970 models. I've seen only one car like this!
