blackout rear tailpan

What year was the first year for the blackout rear tailpan? Im thinking 68, but could be 69?

Thanks jerry! It is a topic on a site I belong to.I wasnt sure if the 67 had it. Jerry I have 1 more paint question, the Z/28 stripes on the cowl below the windshield,did GM spray the stripes on the cowl vent panel with it on the car and did the stripe color go beneath the cowl in the wiper galley (overspray) thru the vents? If I paint the stripes on mine (black) should the overspry go under the cowl vent ?

Norwood sprayed them in place.  LA painted the cowls first and then installed the cowl and painted it.  Have photos in my book to show this.

The SS396 used a signature blacked out rear tail panel on both Camaros and Chevelles starting in 1967.  This was to denote a Super Sport 396 model.  However, there are variations when it comes to Camaro PCs.

For years, there were stories that some of the late 1966 Chevelles carried the blacked out rear panel but I have never seen an original 66 SS396 with blacked out rear tail panel.  To my knowledge, they were body color in 1966.

To answer the second part of your question, regarding exceptions there were a few. The actual 1967 Indy track BB pace cars did not have the blacked out tail panels, however most did including C1 and 01 coded cars. Also GM documents states exceptions for a few dark colors, but I have examined several orig paint cars with the panels blacked out. For instance my survivor rs/ss L78 tahoe turqouis  car was blacked out which is contrary to GM docs. In 1969 BB Z10's and Z11"s did not get blacked out tail panels. Again dark colors such as burnished brown were supposed to be excluded, but I have examined a few orig paint cars and they were painted black.

Have two friends who bought new 67 SS396 Camaros, deepwater blue and tahoe turquoise.  Both cars had the black rear panel.  I have never seen an original SS396 Camaro w/o one 38-39 years ago and I saw quite a few back then.  Today, every once and a while I get to see a survivor that wants a certification and nothing has changed......all have been black.

When/where did you find this information? Some guy at a magazine scoffed at this assertion some time back. He said it gave all the guys in the office a good laugh that someone would believe the blackout rear tailpan was documented.

I thought the Norwod cars had the cowl grilles sprayed while hanging in the window opening...
The Black 69 RS/Z with original paint definatley did not have the cowl grille on the car when it was painted... or striped.
you can see where the stripe paint overspray came though from the back where the wiper nozel cut out is located.

The blackout tailpans on 67 396 Camaros and the pace car exception to that are documented by GM paperwork and backed up with original paint cars. This is a pretty basic fact.
