Shackle bolts reversed?
« on: February 10, 2019, 08:38:47 PM »

I've noticed my 67 LOS shackle bolts are installed opposite from what the AIM shows.
Has anyone else seen shackle bolts assembled reverse when compared to the AIM?
When I get around to restoring this car, do you think keeping the reverse installation the same (with a before picture to prove) to preserve its own unique assembly anomalies would get docked points?

Per the AIM the top nut goes towards the tank and the bottom away from the tank. The LOS is opposite.

I don't want to show my ignorance, but I've never let that stop me before, the picture I see matches the aim pic?

Mikes pic shows opposite from aim imo, as one is underneath car looking up. I remember our 68 matching aim but also it seemed correct for being able to remove a bolt in the future, i.e. tank interference.

  Chick,
The nut mounting direction in the AIM is for the reason you stated. Maybe this was a line workers error or possibly GM did things slightly different in LOS. I decided to assemble it the same (wrong) way when the car gets restored. I'll have photos to show it before the restoration. When at all possible I want to keep the few flaws (re: small paint runs in the door jamb by the pinchweld & firewall cowl top area) and any others I come across during the pre-restoration documenting.
I stumbled across the shackle mounting differences when I was installing new leaf springs in the convertible, and using the LOS car as a reference, had a heck of a time trying to get the upper bolt w/sleeve into the frame opening due to the fuel tank interference. That's when I looked in the AIM and discovered the difference.  I reversed the direction and the install went quickly.

Those shackle bolts were not that fun to get out to start with let alone in backwards!!

It is a  LOS Lefty' Coast thing. The California workers had a issues with verbatim compliance it would seem.
My 68 (Van Nyes Car) had the same thing when I swapped out a Spectra Tank years ago.
The Photo is of the pass spring mount and the AIM is from the driver spring perspective.

Ponits? Not sure, better keep a photo in your glove box for the trophy hunt.
