Incorrect starter brace ???
« on: February 03, 2019, 04:03:20 PM »
I am trying to figure out what is the correct starter brace for my car.

I have a '68 originally with a 327 but the engine block that is in it is a 350 from a '76 Impala. In all the years I've owned it, it never had a starter brace but I would like to put one on.

I have the 12 3/4 inch 153 tooth flywheel and a Delco Remy starter #1108368 1F 1 1

The brace you see in these pictures is from Heartbeat City and is a genuine GM.....part number 3965589. It is what HBC calls out for a small block with a 153 tooth flywheel...….It is about an inch too short!

I'm not sure where the problem is. Either the part number they call out is wrong or.....the stud on the starter I have that the brace connects to is in a location different from where it would be on an original 327 starter or...…..the brace mounting hole in the block is in a different location than a '68 327 block or....some combination of the above.

Whatever the reason, I would still like to find the correct brace (if there is one) that will work with the block and the starter that I have.

Thanks.......Dave

You need the 3816511 brace, which was replaced by 354353 in February, 1975. There's an NOS ONE ON EBAY and it looks like this.

Forgot to say they're also available aftermarket. For example, Classic Industries G5110 for 153 tooth flywheels (the one you need), and G5111 for 168 tooth flywheels (the one you got).

 Ed,

Now we know what books you studied in school.
I'm sure if I look up GM Parts Wiki in the dictionary I'll see your picture.  ;)

Ed, what your showing is a later version service replacement with grooved end but correct ones do not have that grooved end.

That's right. The later applications and service replacements weren't the same as the 1968 production line part, but it's the only thing available unless you can find a used one. Which probably wouldn't be that difficult since literally millions were made!

However, I'm fairly certain Dave doesn't care since the block (and starter) isn't original to his car anyway. Heck, he could even use THIS ONE. That's the one I used on the 327 I put in my 57 because I had it handy.

I have the exact same problem as Dave in the original post with the one I bought from HBC.  Where can I get a correct one with holes at both ends rather than the slotted hook?
Thanks,

Bill

I found it!!! It has a small hole in it? Maybe got shorted out and took a chunk out while the battery was still connected. Weld it real quick, grind it down and repaint.
Or just use as is...Already boxed it up and it's ready to ship. PM me your address and I'll send it to ya.  ;)  Danny

Danny,
The brace arrived. Awesome packaging by the way. :)

I ran it thru the sandblaster and welded up the hole. Next, grind and finish. Fit perfectly. Thanks a million for your assistance with our Z.

Was in Pacific Grove for the last 5 days. Catching up on emails etc. I often brag about my pack jobs. Nice to see it appreciated and glad I could help a fellow Camaro owner get another step complete.  8)  Danny
