interesting but rough...
« on: December 07, 2018, 01:38:24 PM »

Has the very rare 6500/8000 tach/fuel gauge and the axle is still there. But short of getting it for much less than the BIN, probably too rough to build.

Funny, Bill, just got finished sharing the same sentiments with a friend.

Intrigued me being within last 1500 cars made. Which got me wondering, I wonder if that car was made without ZL2 because inventory was depleted? May never know? Obviously the car has been through the usual Camaro butcher mill over its life.

I'm curious why you guys are questioning the car not having the ZL2 hood??   As we've discussed over the years, 'factory installed' ZL2 was VERY rare even on Z28s!    What is there about this car that makes you think it *should* have the ZL2??

For the same reason. I worked in automotive supply chain and the last thing you want is obsolete production inventory at the end of a MY. Some of it can be more work than it is worth to move into service stock and gets scrapped.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chevy notified dealers during October that ZL2 stock had been exhausted and orders specifying it would be cancelled or built without. That type of notification was common for certain interior trim near the end of a MY. ZL2 had more parts than you might be aware of.

Are you saying that Chevy may have installed ZL2 hoods on late production camaros (even if not ordered?) simply to trim down the inventory??   Are there documented examples of this happening?

Well even though it is rough, it is the right color, 52 52 Garnet red.... ;D

Someone will purchase this dream.

My question is what's with the different stripe layout on the deck lid, (where the spoiler would have been)?

A repaint, and they laid down the stripes more narrow?

I was ordering myself a new Silverado a while back (2018) and really wanted the mid size bed 6.5 ft. because that was what my other one had which is a kind of rare option. They made the order but later came back and said no more were being built for 2018 models. The 2019,s are not the same.

No. Every car was built as ordered by the dealer unless certain equipment was no longer available. I ordered a 1981 Citation with swing-out rear windows and it arrived w/o as the option had been cancelled after the order was placed.
Hard to believe, but Chrysler once built cars on spec and stored them until a dealer agreed to take it, once reason they went bust.

Check around, they are out there. I could have had one as a loaner, but instead got one with a regular bed with 30 miles on it (2018) as a loaner.  This was last month when they were repairing a bent push rod and a sticking lifter in my truck.

That seems obvious, doesn't it Austin?  :) :)

Actually, I think probably every manufacturer has done that at one time or another..  to prevent big changes to their production levels.   In fact, I recall a number of years ago when even the Bowling Green corvette plant was stacking up Corvettes in their 'yard' because orders weren't keeping up with their production.   And I've seen news articles with photos of large lots filled with cars from other plants and manufacturers when demand slowed beyond the manufacturer's projections.   These situations generally lead to 'special incentives', or price reductions.

Actually the special model (Z/11?)  Note:  It was an 'X-11'  and it wasn't a bad car .... given the times and options...   :)

I had the Citation '81-'87 and put 100k on it. Had a few repairs but not much. My '85 Pontiac 6000STE, another story. Worst car I ever owned.

I believe several manufacturers do at least some build-to-stock. With limited color/trim selection and no more discrete options, not that risky. At one time Kia did that; a dealer told me they got whatever was sent.
