 I've always liked that picture of the paint shop. It tells me that the tail panel and also the rocker blackouts (car in background) likely used the same gloss black.
  I hope there was some sort of down or updraft for the overspray!

Most folks aren't aware that there was only ONE black prime "flow-coat" paint system on the Chevrolet side of the plant, and every steel part that came into the Chevrolet plant raw and needed paint went through that 7-stage hot cleaning and phosphate system and got black lacquer primer. That included everything from engine accessory drive brackets to wheels, hoods, fenders, header panels, inner fenders, radiator support, center grille and hood latch support, lower valance panel, and dozens of smaller parts; larger parts were hung on dedicated hooks, smaller parts were painted in baskets.

All were what I'd call semi-flat or satin, about 30% gloss. Any underhood part that was semi-gloss or full gloss (like the heater blower case) came that way from its supplier - the plant had no facilities for higher gloss black painting of loose parts.

This could be the paint used for the blackout on the rockers and tailpan.

When a now deceased buddy of mine repainted the back tailpan on my car we used what I would call a satin black.  Hot Rod Black, described as "Pre-Flattened Low-Gloss Color". We used that because it was the closest thing my buddy - who was a body shop painter for about 50 years - remember the color to be on original cars back in the day. Believe it or not.

30 percent gloss is what I am going with and there are some documents that suggest the same number.

Would the black paint/glosses used on the Chevrolet side necessarily mimic or have to exactly match what was used on the Fisher Body side?  Finish colors obviously must match down to the manufacturer batch number, but were the other paints also required to be standardized across both "sides of the wall", to include gloss levels?

The lower part of the front fenders was also blacked out (on some cars)... done on Chevy side...

On the line that angles back into the trunk area (across the round flat trunk lid rubber bumper area), yes.
The tape line in the area that divides the rear panel from the quarter seam, you can feel an edge in some areas.

Looking at the picture, it appears the tail panel that is being painted black is unmasked & the car is unpainted while the car in the background appears to be painted & masked ready for rockers to be painted. Any thoughts? ...Joe

Not a great pic but the car being painted is masked in my opinion.

I believe it is too, but there is no protection from overspray going into the trunk area or HIS lungs. Would the trunk have been painted at this point?

Not unusual for them not using a respirator.

I don’t know any more about the picture so I can’t comment on any more details.

Charley,the pictures of the green 68 low mileage car, is that one of the two 375hp cars that were ordered by two brothers from Alberta, Canada?If so,  I had a chance to buy one of the cars from a gentleman who bought one of the cars from the one brother.This was back in the late eighties and the car was for sale for $22000.00 Canadian.At that tme it had 28000 miles and he had just purchased some NOS tires from Carlisle.
