3 different intakes same cast number 3927184
« on: September 23, 2018, 12:26:42 PM »
I'm a bit confused about this intake 3927184 seems 2 or maybe 3 versions of the same intake was made
1.with oil fill tube.
2.with oil fil tube but plugged /cast over
3. no oil fill tube or plug in the cast.
which if any is correct for my 1969 Camaro its an early January 69 build date and it also has a 68 spoiler on the back which I'm told is correct for an early build 69 thru internet research.
Any help much appreciated.

Oil fill tube went away in 69, and oil was added via valve covers.

OK,do you know what month in 69 it went away? or do you mean 1968 was last year for oil fill tube?
Could my January build date technically  have either a fill tube or no fill tube?
like the rear 68 spoiler on early 69 Camaros?

According to the Colvin CBTN book, 3927184 is a 69 only 350 c.i. intake, 255 or 300 h.p. and used on passenger, Chevelle, Camaro, Corvette, Nova.  Apparently marine applications also.  Also says used extensively as a service replacement.  With the earlier dated ones having the hole for the fill tube, maybe they were service replacements, if not actually used late in the 68 model year.  If you look at the ones with a "T" by the casting number, they don't appear to even have the old boss for a fill tube. No oil fill tube used in the intake manifold for the entire 69 model year.

Update - just found this old thread:

I'm not certain, but I believe the change to the valve cover oil fill was related to emissions controls, and the pcv valve. Previously there was an opening in the back of the block behind the distributor and the crankcase was vented from this opening via a fitting and rubber hose. The opening was eliminated when the pcv valve setup instituted. So a 69 block does not have the opening. I'm not sure about 68, but I had a 67 327 which had the opening and was vented out the rear of the block. It did not have a pcv valve, and there were no openings in the valve covers.

Not real sure about the dates but the hole in the block as late as 64 went to a "road draft tube" down the back with a filtered oil fill cap. It was supposed to draw air out the tube as the car moved and in the oil cap. Later the hole attached to air cleaner and a hose with an inline PCV went to the oil fill with a non vented cap. In 68 the hole in the block disappeared and the fitting in the oil fill. The holes in the valve covers appeared then with the PVC and the vent to the air cleaner. Not sure why my 64 283 impala had the draft tube but my 64 327 vette had the air cleaner fitting and the closed oil fill with PCV hose.
