Do they still have the small black/gold label somewhere on the main body outside perimeter?  If so, there may still be a part number legible.

The 1st pic shows the generic GMPD service unit available into the '90s on the right. Could also be the repro. It has the vent tube with 2 45º bends, not known to have been used in production. Also has the bead in the base to raise the element. The other unit has a flat base and the 90º vent tube, almost certainly a production unit. There were three versions of the flat bottom:

6485234 L48 w/auto trans-has vacuum valve in the snout...coded DF
6485235 302, 396/427...coded DG

Give us a pic of the mid section of the snorkel side on the raised bottom cleaner, the side that faces the fan if you can. It will help identify whether the cleaner is a reproduction or later OE production. Give us both cleaners if you wish -

I think the big block base was same as small block base but the spacer ring was used to make up the difference in height.

Yes the spacer ring was used with the SB.
The flat bottom version is in all likely hood a production line piece.
The other one was as William stated either late replacement stock or repro.

If I am not mistaken, the inner raised ring on the base located the element more positively. With the element actually sitting down "inside" the raised area.

I believe under certain conditions there was an air flow restriction with the original flat-bottom. Elevating the element would eliminate the problem.

That doesn't sound like a problem one would want to have!  :)   Do you have more information on this situation?   IF the air filter itself was a bit short, that would definitely affect this situaion.   Are you aware of certain air filters that are shorter or taller (preferable) than the original?

I don't know for certain that's why the change was made. Not mentioned in any Chevrolet service bulletin. But it makes sense. Considering the variables involved-air cleaner stamping, carb gasket thickness, element height, depth of insertion of the vent tubes, it may have been possible. Appears to have been intermittently phased in. I know of a Sept '69 Z/28 with a revised base and an October '69 Z/28 with a flat base.

The 90º vent tube may have never changed in production. It was only a problem on Holley DP carbs. ZL1s were supposed to be built with the 850 DP but most were not.

My original 18September69 Z28 also has a flat base...   incidentally, I have another original flat base a/c I acquired from a friend in the late '70's (from a '69 Z28 - although I gave another friend the original extension back then - now replaced with a repro extension) which I have no plans for if anyone can use it.
