Position of Air Cleaner Decals
« on: August 26, 2018, 05:05:00 PM »
Hello Members!

Was there a certain position that the motor cubic inch/horsepower decals were placed on the aircleaner lid in correlation to where the silkscreened "Sevice Instructions" image appears on the underside? I hope everyone doesn't think I'm being overly fussy about this tiny detail, but it seems others stew and fret about where factory stickers are placed and my originals were long gone by the time I acquired the car.

Thanks to all!

I'm guessing either no one can answer this or those decals were just positioned where ever they landed.

Comments?

So I was going to watch this tread with interest. Speaking in general (The below might be applicable to Engine decal)
I know replacing the decal to match the original as found location would be preferable, as found as restored.
Refer to the appropriate factory Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) for year and component decal installation position detail.
Lacking that would be using the normative practice as found in Original benchmark vehicles & historical photos of similar placement.
Then throw in advertising & pre production information that was later found to be inconsistent with actual production practices.
Then (Squared) differences between the two f body plants (i.e. Norwood -vs- Van Nuys)

What year? What Displacement?

I think Buzz want to know if the engine decal lines up in any way or form with the silk screen on the bottom side of an open element air filter lid. I don't know this one....Joe

Doh! OK, Clocking in relation to the underside, that depended on the Factory worker(s) primary hand usage, my theory would be Left handed worker would have installed the decal in line with the silk screen and a Right handed worker would have installed the decal 180 out.

APRIL 1st yet.

I am just having a joke at my own expense I should have read his question better.

Again as removed then restored the same, lacking that detail or knowledge of & factory documentatation is unclear, then looking at survivors would be the suggested method, I bet this is a detail BUZZ is the first to ask about,

For example, I have a UNRESTORED 396 lid with Curved silk screen.
"IF" the cover decal on the top is at 6- O clock, the screen on the back is at the 9- O clock position.

I was pondering this. The arrangement you describe above, if memory serves, mimics the placement of the decal on the outside of say, a 327 black enclosed air cleaner. SO - yours is a survivor 396, with the curved silk screen service message. Is yours a '67? I'm trying to restore a May '67 L35. This info helps. Thanks!

Unknown, it was a swap meet find from years ago, I have 2 other 68's (Lids) that have been restored and never documented the as removed postions prior to replating.

My air cleaner lid still has both the silk screening and the original '302' label on it, can check how one is clocked relative to the other if required, although mine is a 1969 vehicle not a 1967.
I would think though that during engine dress, the air cleaner lid went on without a moment's thought as to where the silk screening was located on the underside, and the line worker just focussed on applying the top label front and center.

The first place IMHO that would know if it was required would be in the NCRS judging manuals at least for Corvettes and not aware of anything like that. Orientation would add cost and in mfg. there has to be a reason. Thought provoking question.... :)

Attached are two pictures of the original 04B LOS L35 air cleaner lid from my survivor.
One thing noted in the areas that are against the air cleaners rubber looks like a full gloss black.
I Placed 1/8" tape from the top center hole, across the decals, around the edge and back to the center hole to make a reference between the top decals and the bottom screen instructions. The instructions are dark due to decades of grime. I have to figure out a way to safely clean the print so as not to remove any of it.
Though there is definitely some alignment between the decals and screen , I suspect it was more coincidental. Or....maybe the lid was placed in a fixture to print the screen and then flipped over to get the decals placed? Maybe there is a repeatable relation here?

Interesting topic!

Hi Chick!

We used to PM back and forth on the Camaros.net forum a couple years ago. Same Buzz. I lost steam on my project when the wife developed cancer. I've since got a renewed drive as she's expressed the desire to see the car finished before...well...you know.

Good to hear from you! Thanks for the reply!
