'68 Camaro Z/28 on eBay
« on: August 16, 2018, 06:00:06 PM »
I was burned out of purchasing this car just a few days ago by a guy named Chris. I talked to Chris for 56 minutes and taped the conversation. Anytime I talk serious issues that involve large sums of money I tape the call. So the agreement was I was going to sleep on it and call him at 7am the following morning. He was to wait for my call and he agreed to that... I listened to the whole 56 minutes again to make sure I wasn't losing my mind. I do some research on the car and find out that it was for sale on the Yenko site 4 years ago so, and I ALMOST bought it. The guy that had it for sale on Yenko was Kelly. I find Kelly's number and call him and we chat for a while. He had the car for 20 years. I told him I am going to buy it. He said he really wanted to buy it back some day. And that the agreement with Chris, he was to call Kelly if he ever wanted to sell it, to give Kelly the right of first refusal. I ended up purchasing the Butternut Yellow car instead. The next morning I called the owner back to tell him I will pull the trigger for 31K or 33K which was the asking price and he said I just took a deposit for the car. I said I thought you were going to wait for me like we agreed. His answer was if the deal falls through I'll get back to ya. No reason to get into an argument about it, it was done.
The next day I get a call from Kelly telling me has a loan ready to go and was I really set on keeping the car. Or he said if you don't buy it, can I call Chris. He wanted to do the right thing and call me FIRST and not call Chris. And would I sell it to him. I told him the story, and that I DID NOT get the car. Fast forward a few days I talk to a guy who tells me his friend Bob from Camaro Specialties has a '68 for sale. I call Bob a couple days ago and we chat about the car. Today I check eBay and the car is for sale. I look at the seller and it's Camaro Specialties. It ended up being the same car. Bob was the one who got the car. So I just got off the phone with Bob 10 minutes ago and we chatted about it and laughed. Of course not Bobs fault in any way. I didn't purchase it the first time cause it had no POP or paperwork. And inspection from anyone. Chris bought the car from Kelly and had it inspected by Jerry M. But I didn't know it was the same car.  Funny how it all comes around. I almost bought this car TWICE!! So now the NOS rear quarters are not included in the auction, or mentioned as recommending to be replaced. Also they do not post a clear picture of the quarters in either auction.
If it is a clean car it would be way cool to cruise as is.
I am not sure it is 40k car. I think the 31-33k that Danny mentioned 4 years ago is right there. If the (original) motor has had a fresh rebuild maybe 35k.

I can't remember what it was 4 years ago. Chris wanted 33K just a few days ago. And said there is SOME room. So I was going to start with 31K and then MAYBE jump to his asking price if need be. Didn't get the chance. Original 4:56 axle gears are gone, now has the 3:73. Jerry M mentions in his report that back underbody panels replaced. But Bob said it's only on one side as he shows in the picture. Teal blue is a cool scarce color, however it's NOT that color. So the repaint takes it down a notch for me for sure. So that was a big factor for me. And as I said years ago when I joined this site, I was told by an old body guy who has since passed away, cars are NEVER the same once you change quarters, especially when BOTH are changed. That was just HIS opinion obviously. Kelly Morris had it for 20 years and he is a super nice guy. You could probably call him up if need be. I wouldn't pay 40K, not even 35K. I was hoping at 31K I could then use the next 3 or 4 thousand to have it shipped, insured, registered. Not to be... Danny

Obviously a 'rebuilt' anything is only as good as the materials used and the personnel doing the rebuilding.  I DO think it's possible for an item to be *rebuilt* as good as, or even better than, when it was new, but it requires high quality materials on a par with the original, AND the rebuilder must know his stuff and implement it.

That said, I think most often *rebuilt* anything is like the 'old body man' told to Danny about the quarter replacement...

I DO think it's possible for an item to be *rebuilt* as good as, or even better than, when it was new, but it requires high quality materials on a par with the original, AND the rebuilder must know his stuff and implement it.

Absolutely, even when new they aren't anywhere near perfect.  When I rebuilt mine it was virgin.  The crank throw was short .002" but is easily corrected when ground.  Some shops don't check this and just regrind without correcting.

Pistons in the hole .020" which doesn't help quench, poor mixture motion, and generally makes them more susceptible to detonation.  Easily corrected with custom piston pin heights and/or decking the block.  Speaking of which the decks are almost always uneven anyway and should be cleaned up.  Even my brand new 502 crate engine sitting here is uneven.

When I tore down my DZ it also had some odd bearing wear in the main saddle.  Turned out it needed an align hone, and the new bearings need to be dressed on the back side to rid them of high spots that create an uneven bearing surface once torqued down, and will generate more heat if not dressed.

Cylinder heads need a lot of attention as well.  Cheap 0-ring seals on the valve stem need to be tossed, they are only marginally good at controlling oil, even with new tight guides.   Best to machine for positive seals for better oil control.  You really don't want oil in the combustion process, especially when pushing the compression deal with todays pump gas.  Speaking of compression, mine, with all the things I mentioned, I believe the highest cylinder after all the measuring was 10.7:1, wasn't even close to the advertised 11:1.

All kinds of improvements to be made on factory stuff, lots of HP to be found as well without even deviating from the stock nature of the engine.    Technically mine got a compression bump even though it's still 11:1, but now a "true" 11:1.

I am happy with what I have, but we all know one is never enough. That's just not how it works..  ;)
I see this car had a bid for $40,000 then retracted.. Curious what their reasoning was.  Danny

Maybe they read this thread and realised the car was just bought after being offered in the low $30k-s.
That said, if the bidder truly thought it was worth the $40k, no reason to retract a bid just because the seller was set to make some coin.

Bob is fast. Always has been fast.  He beat me out of a LOT of deals going back almost 40 years.  He got the local resale paper a day before everyone else did and there was never a chance to get anything.  Thats what he does, he hustles.  Flip cars and flips parts. There is no such thing as "dibs" with that guy.

Sorry you lost out on that deal Danny. I know its gotta sting.

Actually not this time. I was faster by a long shot, there was just some unethicalism involved. I don't think that's a word, but you get it. Been a tradesman for over 30 years. Never had a lawsuit against me, don't take advantage of the elderly and sleep like a baby at night. And that's all I'm gonna say. Danny
