Interesting that a end of July engine found its way into a early October car? But it was the end of the year.
396? vs 402?--Basically all the same animal. Engine started out in 1965 as a 396. Earned a reputation as a street brawler and at the track too. Marketing already established and the numbers had a good "ring" to it is why it still was referred to as a 396 even though it grew to 402 starting with the 70 model year. To confuse matters more, that engine was referred to as a 400 when ordered in a pickup after 1970. Marketing = 396, Parts counter = 402. A 396 has a 4.094 In. bore, whereas engineers decided to bore the engine .031 in 70 resulting in a 4.125 In. bore, hence 402. Nothing else changed.
