Convertible top differences
« on: May 27, 2018, 11:44:13 PM »
Guys other than the rear portion of the convertible top differences, is there anything different at the front? Like the matches or the part that fits to the top of the windshield?

Are you asking about the top frame - power versus manual?

Yes Pete. Is the front bow between manual and power top the same? Are the front latches same too?

Yes the front bow is the same, the hinge between the front rail and the one over the quarter windows is different (which probably makes the entire front side rail different as the hinge is welded to one or the other rail), and the operating arms that push and pull the top up and down are different.

I can't find the old discussions here or at the TC site on this, but I believe the only difference is the rear side frame sections, where the power top is more beefed up.  Heres' a Firebird discussion which is probably the same:

The top is found in the Body by Fisher Service Manual, but I don't know if it details the differences.

Thanks Mark and Pete. Just as I suspected. I knew the rear section was going to be different. Read some threads where someone put a motor on a manual top and it damaged the frame on the manual top. Good to know about the front bow. I suspect latches are same too.

Here is the only top frame difference, the middle welded hinges over the doors, power on left, manual on right.  Rest of frame is the same and can unbolted.  But this hinge is welded to the two side pieces.

Does anyone have clear close-up images of the power frame linkages and attachment points?

IF you could, a couple close ones along the top of the first hinge similar to the side view that KevinW posted above. I'm interested in the attachment points and general shapes of the three short links. I'll be glad to share whatever I learn. Thanks!
