XXB suffix code
« on: May 08, 2018, 06:51:21 PM »
I have found a 1967 (J 13 6) 3892657 block. It has a suffix code V1013XXB.
The broach is true so It is not a restamp. I cannot find any accurate information on this XXB.
One post seems to think it is a part counter motor made in Mexico which does not work because it is a Flint block made in 1966 when GM didn't get any parts from Mexico
If anyone has any info on this please enlighten me.

XXB is a 1962-1967 "Universal service engine assembly" 327 (except special high performance) installed in passenger cars. The part number was 3912353 and it came with everything except the distributor, exhaust manifolds, etc...

Thanks Ed, Great info. That is good news, I was thinking it might be marine or industrial.
Are you sure as to the (except high performance)? It has double hump heads and polished or crude chrome finish valve covers.
Did they use double hump heads with 1.94 valves on the lower HP 327s?
I am looking to buy this motor but if it isn't at least 300HP the seller is asking too much for it.
The seller took it out of his deceased dads 57 chevy and all he knows is his dad replaced the 283 with it in 67.
Thanks again for the info.   Jim

Sorry. That should be except SPECIAL high performance. Included all 327's from 210 to 300 horse power. I fixed my above post.

From Alan Colvin's "Chevrolet by the Numbers" (multiple years), 1.94 valves were used on the following "Double Hump" heads (Casting numbers 3782461, 3782461X, 3890462, 3917291 and 3927186):

1962 - 1970 Full size 300 HP (see notes 1 and 2 below)
1962 - 1963 Corvette 300, 340 and 360 HP
1964 - 1970 Corvette 300 HP (see note 1 below)
1964 - 1970 Chevelle 300 HP (see notes 1 and 2 below)
1965 - 1969 Full size 250 HP (see note 2 below)
1965 Chevelle 250 HP
1965 Corvette 250 HP
1965 Nova 250
1966 - 1968 Full size, Chevelle and Nova 275 HP
1967 - 1968 Camaro 275 and 295 HP
1968 Nova 295 HP
1969 Camaro and Nova 300 HP (see notes 1 and 2 below)
1970 Nova 300 HP (see note 1 below)
1970 Camaro 300 HP (see note 1 below)

Note 1: The 1969 and 1970 300 HP engines used either the 3927186 heads with the "Double Hump" casting symbol or the 3947041 heads with the "Triangular" casting symbol
Note 2: 1.94 valves were also used on the 1969 250 and 255 HP engines, but had the 3932441 "Rectangular" casting symbol heads

Also note that 1.94 valves continued to be used into the new millennia, but the "Double Hump" casting symbol ended in 1970.

Thanks to everyone for the comments and info. I am looking into doing an RSSS350  67 convertible.   P coded. Would this XXB work for a 350?
I have the 350 crank and just about everything I need to make it a 350. The date numbers on the block and heads are two weeks earlier than the build date so if the XXB will work it will be great.

Yes, the 3892657 block was used for the 1967 302, 327 and 350 engines but the 1967 302 and 327 cranks were small journal. The 350 crank was a large journal so it won't just "drop in". You'll need to do some machine work to get it to fit.

Ed, I just closed the deal on the RSSS350 and will start moving stuff to my place sat, 140 mile trip to Henderson.  It is a solid project and comes with two garages full of parts. I figure three pickups full.
I know the 657 will work, my dilemma is will the XXB suffix code work for a 350 or did they just use it for the 327? as per the crank, I was going to have the mains on the crank machined to sj but when I told that to a good friend who is very savvy about such things, he just said "duh, don't you think it would be better to make the line bore large journal". I think I will go with the "duh" idea :).  Thanks again for your help with this info. and if you know if they used the XXB code on the 350 let me know.  Jim

I would more strongly consider the advantages of the 327 engine, and the small journal crankshaft...

1) IMO, the 327 ci engine was Chevrolet's BEST small block for combined 'torque' and 'hp' performance.  It was/is a great tradeoff between the bore to stroke relationship.

2) The small journal 327 crankshaft is more likely to be a forged crank, and many 'old time' racers from the 70's favored the small journal due to the lower rotational friction in the bearings.

I am 73, I just adore the sbc 327. I agree it was the best combo all around in the 4" bore small block, The only thing better was the 302. The Camaro convertible I'm restoring is a 67 with a 3L and 4P code
(RS SS 350). I want to get it as close to numbers matching as I can so it is necessary to build the date matching 657 block to a 350. As I said in one of my previous posts I need to know if the XXB code could include a 300hp 350.

I don’t think you are going to get more of an answer to your question about the XXB code. I can not find any mention of it being used for 350 warranty engines. But I will continue to do some checking.

I understand your situation. But it’s not the original block for the car. You could try to find a 1968 CE coded block with the correct 350 journal size.

What is the crank journal size of the block you have now?

The 327 was a good engine. The 350 can be built to rev as good as the 327. It will then out produce the 327 for torque and horsepower. Spending dollar for dollar on a 327 and a 350, the 350 will give you more bang for your buck.

Minor issue but the Camaro SS 350 was rated at 295 hp in 67 (and 68).
